London: H. S. Nichols Ltd.,, 1897. Translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R. F. Burton, reprinted from the Original Edition and Edited by Leonard C. Smithers. Illustrated by a Series of Seventy-one Original Illustrations reproduced from the Original Pictures in Oils specially painted by Albert Letchford. 12 volumes, large octavo (253 Ã 154 mm). Publisher's red half morocco, green cloth boards, raised bands, title gilt direct to the spines in English in the second and fourth, compartments, in Arabic in the first and sixth, interlace panels to the third and fifth, top edges gilt the others uncut, marbled endpapers. 71 photogravure plates from specially commissioned oils by Albert Letchford, each with captioned tissue-guard. Spines just a little dulled and rubbed, overall an excellent set. One of the variant issues of the Nichols-Smithers Editions, this styled the "illustrated 'Library Edition'" by Penzer (p.122), while the blocking to the tails of the spines identifies it as the Kamashastra Edition. An excellent example of this attractive and well-produced set.
