Experimenta Nova (ut vocantur) Magdeburgica - GUERICKE (Otto Von) - 1672.
In-folio, contemporary calf, gilt spine. FIRST EDITION. Guericke's magnus opus, Experimenta Nova contributed perhaps more than any other single work to the modern understanding of electromagnetism, vacuum and gas physics. It contains, among other critical discoveries and inventions, the earliest reference to Guericke's celebrated vacuum pump and Magdeburg hemispheres. The important physical proprieties of electric currents and gases are here clearly demonstrated for the first time, opening the way to the major discoveries of the 18th century. Fine copy, one the few left with its complete original illustration consisting of a fine engraved title, two large flooding plates (including the famous Magdeburg experiment), and 20 engravings in the text (seven full pages, one repeated). Contemporary binding, bearing very minor restoration marks. Stamp marks of on the end papers and on the back of the title page. Dibner, 13-14 (Dibner, Heralds: 55); Evans 30; Norman 952; Horblit 44.
