Berlin: Druck von Gerbrunger, 1904. The origin of codex Birgia has been a topic of debate since first published. There appears to be a consensus that they correspond to the Mixteca-Puebla style but exactly where they fit into that spectrum of works is difficult to pin down. Most arguments are on the basis of stylistic and iconographic elements, but a direct relation to any particular aspect of material culture is tenuous. THREE VOLUMES.          Chelsea Rags, 1888Chicago 26 I/I; Levy 35; Way 22. Transfer lithograph in black printed on cream handmade laid paper with the watermark O.W.P & A.C.L.

Goulding., London 1904 - Chelsea Rags, 1888Chicago 26 I/I; Levy 35; Way 22Transfer lithograph in black printed on cream handmade laid paper with the watermark O.W.P & A.C.L. A posthumous edition of 47 impressions printed by Goulding in 1904, the stone was erased the same year. Way states that there were only 13 life time impressions of this plate. It was published in The Albermarle in 1892, of which there were 500-1000 copies. ‘The published edition of this subject was machine printed on a smooth ivory wove paper, which has often discoloured to cream, by Thomas way from a supplementary stone or stones in order to protect Whistler’s original stone from wear. The retransferring process resulted in some losses in the lightest lines and a slight appearance os spottiness is evident when periodical prints are compared to life-time impressions pulled from the original matrix.Image 180 x 159 mm (image); 310 x 238 mm (sheet)Sheet size 375 x 260mm ( 14 7/8 x 10.5 inches) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

(Guatemala City and Surrounding), [ca. 1904-1907]. Hardcover. Very good +. Oblong 4to. green cloth album with marbled endpapers, measuring approximately 13.25?" x 9.74?". Containing 24 stiff card pages with 64 photographs total, 50 mounted recto and verso, 13 laid in loose. 21 of the photos larger format (8" x 10" approx.) with remainder roughly 3" x 5". Mounted photos all with manuscript captions. 22 instances of descriptions absent photographs, presumed perished. Binding a bit shaken, front hinge splitting. But overall sound, clean, and good overall. Prints well preserved, generally very good. A significant, early 1900s photograph album of Guatemala, most likely complied and partially photographed by the wife of then United States Consular General to Guatemala, William P. Kent (1857-1936, Consul 1906-09). With several well composed shots of the exterior and interior of the Consular?'s residence at No. 76 5th Ave. in Guatemala City, as well as many images of trips through the country in and around the areas of Guatemala City, San Rafael, and Santa Maria. Other historic images include a group shot of Central American dignitaries aboard the USS Marblehead during peace treaty negotiations, and several of railroad interest, most notably an 8?" x 10?" commercial print of Guatemalan President Manuel Joe Estrada Cabrera captioned "Signing contract for construction of the Northern R.R." - possibly what would become known as the Farcquar Contract with The United Fruit Company for completion of The Northern Railroad in 1904. Two prints, including the contract signing, bear the stamp of photographer Albert G. Valdeavellano; one stamped Jose Garcia Sanchez. A series of five magnificent 8?" x 10?" prints (above, left) show the ruins at Antigua. Two enlargements show what is described as a large-scale, cement-constructed topographical map of Guatemala housed in the Temple of Minerva and built at a cost of some $100,000. The album and most loose prints are captioned in detail, making this a rich and important primary source.

n/a: n/a, 1904. A superb and extensive collection of herbarium specimens of British Plants with over 650 species represented; approximately 100 of these are supported with original watercolour illustrations, and a few with original b/w photographs of specimens or habitat. Each specimen is displayed in a separate card folder (size approx. 38 x 51cm folding to 38 x 26cm.), carefully sewn in place with white thread; and generally protected with an inserted sheet of blotting paper; each with a printed species label to which location and date have been added in manuscript and occasionally the collector's initials. The illustrations are painted or inserted onto the inside front fold opposite the dried plant and vary somewhat in quality, with some highly accomplished. The specimens were collected mainly between 1904 and 1910 with a few later specimens around 1913, with a further adjunct collection of specimens around 1932. We are not sure who the main collector was, but all collections appear to be made by the "J" family as there are a few references to E. V. J.; E. M. J.; D. R. J.; and E. S. C. J. The centre of collection is focused around Canterton in Dorset, but collections were made all over England and Wales inlcuding: Salisbury Plain, Corfe Castle, Snowdon, Bramshaw, New Forest, Lulworth, Sedge Moor, Rakes Brake[?], Ramsey, Swanage, Cheddar, Yarmouth, Coombe Bissett, Sheepstor etc. and in Cornwall - Kynance, Goonhilly Downs etc; and in Wales - Snowdon and Cefn Rocks. To give an impression of the scope of this extraordinary collection there are at least 24 orchid species represented as follows: - bog orchid, New Forest Aug 1906 (supported with a contemporary b/w photograph presumably of the collected plant); broad-leaved helleborine, Cadman Road, Aug. 1903; marsh heleborine, Sennen (W. Cornwall), July 1919; white helleborine, White Parish Hill, June 1906; common tway-blade, Canterton, July 1904; heart-leaved tway-blade, near Llyn Anafon, July 1910 (N.Wales); bird's nest orchid, Binstead Hill Wood, June 1906; commony lady's-tresses, nr. Brook Pond, Sept. 1903; large-flowered lady's tresses, New Forest 1905; green-winged Orchid, Canterton, May 1904; military orchid June 1909 (initialled W. M. J., no location given); Orchis ustulata (burnt orchid), Whiteparish Hill, June 1906; early purple orchid, Canterton, May 1903; spotted hand orchid (O. mascula), Canterton, June 1908; Marsh Orchid, (O. latifolia), New Forest , May 1912; Pyramidal Orchid, Lulworth, 1906; butterfly orchid, New Forest, June 1906; great butterfly orchid, Buckcharm, June 1905; fragrant orchid; nr. Rhydymwyn, July 1910; green frog orchid, The Leeta, Mold, N. Wales, June 1903; bee orchid, Lulworth, June 1904; spider orchid, Swanage, April 1910; and Fly Orchid, Bentworth, June 1906. The specimens in their folders are contained within a six-shelf stained pine cabinet, adapted to the purpose; to the the lip of each shelf in manuscript are lists of plant families, though these only partly relate to the specimens on that shelf. The cabinet is a little bruised and worn, and the key to the lock missing, but the contents and specimens are in excellent condition, a few folders dusty to the outside. An extraordinary collection, containing many rare species, a testimony to a bygone Britain before the introduction of intensive farming and the wholesale loss of wildflower meadows. A large heavy item: a shipping surcharge will apply. . Very Good. Folio.

         The Grey World

Heinemann, UK 1904 - 1st Edition 1904. Evelyn Underhill (6 December 1875 – 15 June 1941) was an English Anglo-Catholic writer and pacifist known for her numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular Christian mysticism. In her first novel, The Grey World, described by one reviewer as an extremely interesting psychological study, the hero's mystical journey begins with death, and then moves through reincarnation, beyond the grey world, and into the choice of a simple life devoted to beauty, reflecting Underhill's own serious perspective as a young woman.          Pijpelijntjes. (1e druk).

      - Amsterdam, Jacq. van Cleef, 1904. Ingenaaid. 220 p. 1e druk.

1904 - Hi, This lot is a 1904 Original Hardback Wisden in good to Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, the things to point out are that the hinges are weak, they are not split nor has the book had any restoration but Wisden forgot the hinge strengtheners. The front board is very bright and clean with excellent gilt. The spine cloth is darkened and hence the gilt is dark too. The rear board is also very good. Internally it is very nice indeed. Excellent photoplate. Other than the hinges it would be a superb book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sur une courbe continue sans tangente, obtenue par une construction géométrique élémentaire.

P.A. Norstedt & Soner, Stockholm 1904 - First edition, extremely rare offprint issue, inscribed by the author to Fredholm, of von Koch’s paper, which contains the first examples of geometric fractals, the famous ‘Koch curve’ and ‘Koch snowflake’. The term ‘fractal’ was coined much later, by Benoit Mandelbrot in his 1975 book Les objets fractals, forme, hasard et dimension. A fractal is an object that displays ‘self-similarity’ on all scales; it need not exhibit exactly the same structure at all scales, but the same ‘type’ of structures must appear on all scales. A fractal should also have a ‘dimension’ that is not a whole number, unlike a line (dimension 1) or a plane (dimension 2). Today fractals have found a bewildering variety of applications in both the arts and sciences (fractal patterns have been found in the works of Jackson Pollock). The first example of a fractal was the ‘Cantor set,’ introduced by Georg Cantor (1845-1918) in 1883. This set is obtained by starting with a line segment and then removing the middle third, leaving two shorter line segments; then one removes the middle third of each of these two segments; iterating the process indefinitely results in the Cantor set, an infinite set of points that is ‘self-similar,’ in the sense that if one magnifies a section of the set, one obtains the whole set again. The Cantor set is not really a curve: it is an infinite set of points, but is ‘countable’, like the whole numbers 1,2,3, , but unlike the original line segment whose points cannot be ‘counted’ in this way (a fact that was also proved by Cantor). In this sense the Cantor set cannot be regarded as a geometric fractal. Koch modified Cantor’s construction to obtain a genuine curve. The Koch curve is constructed by starting with a straight line segment, erecting an equilateral triangle with base the middle third of the original segment, and then erasing that middle third. This produces a shape with four line segments, each one-third the length of the original segment. The same construction is now applied to each of these four segments. The Koch curve is the result of iterating this process indefinitely. The Koch snowflake is the result of applying the process to an equilateral triangle instead of a line segment, so that a Koch snowflake is three Koch curves joined together. The Koch curve is self-similar, in the sense that any part of it, when magnified, looks the same as part of the original curve. The Koch curve has infinite length, because the total length increases by a factor 4/3 with each iteration, so that after n iterations the length is increased by a factor (4/3)n, which becomes larger without limit as n increases. The ‘fractal dimension’ of the Koch curve maybe be calculated by counting the number N(d) of circles of diameter d needed to cover the curve; as d get smaller N(d) gets larger, but the ratio – log N(d) / log d approaches a definite number as d approaches zero. In fact, it approaches log 4/log 3 = 1.26186 - the fractal dimension of the Koch curve. Koch’s aim in this paper was not, of course, to give examples of fractals, whose definition was 70 years in the future. Rather, as the title of the paper states, he wished to give a geometric construction of a curve that was continuous but not differentiable, that is, it had no well-defined tangent at any point. The first example of such a curve had been given by Karl Weierstrass (1815-97) in a paper presented on 18 July 1872 to the Prussian Academy of Sciences (it was not published until 1895). Before Weierstrass most mathematicians believed that continuous curves were differentiable except at isolated points. But Koch was dissatisfied with Weierstrass’s example: in the introduction to the present paper, he wrote, "it seems to me that his example is not satisfactory from the geometrical point of view since the function is defined by an analytic expression that hides the geometrical nature of the corresponding curve and so from this point of view one does not see why the curve has no tange [Attributes: First Edition]

The Face of the Earth [Das Antlitz Der Erde], 5 Volume Set with Index

Oxford; 1904-1924: Oxford University Press Published from 1904-1924, this was Eduard Suess's monumental contribution that revolutionized geological studies. Initially, scholars were overwhelmed by the evidence because there was no index nor maps in a set that now comes to over 2400 pages.. Volume V not only provides an index but Maps. Map I, for instance, is helpful in portraying Suess' analysis of the earth's surface; Map II, his analysis of Europe, and Map III, the recument sheets of the Alps. Five of the maps are in color and the concise text description adds to the value of the work. Paradoxically, Volume V was printed in a small print run and copies are rare. OCLC shows that only the British Library records the entire five volume set. Here\along with Wegener and Du Toit's Our Wandering Continents, we have the essence of the geological revolution from the end of the Nineteenth Century to Du Toit's work published in 1937. The thoroughness of Suess's work remains essential for a core library on the history of geology. Lester King's work in 1962 sheds some new light but relies upon the work much of which was so carefully recorded that the five volumes have stood the test of time. The original set is rare in fine condition and the unopened issue shows that though Michael G.D. Johnson who notes he owned the complete set in June 1943, it was never used thus accounting for its remarkable condition.. Quarto.

Annotated album of Photographs of Buildings of Fair [-Vanderbilt] Heirs in San Francisco

1904 - Important Pre-Earthquake San Francisco Album: Vanderbilt Real Estate Holdings. The Vanderbilt real estate portfolio in pre-earthquake San Francisco. This album documents approximately forty downtown San Francisco real estate holdings of the heirs of real estate, silver, and railroad magnate James Graham Fair. This album belonged to Fair’s daughter Virginia Graham Fair Vanderbilt, first wife of William K. Vanderbilt II. Most of the 41 original photographs are mounted with colored street maps locating the properties. The tipped-in typed index of the buildings is heavily annotated with sale prices, some with dates showing that Mrs. Vanderbilt sold in 1904-05, just before the earthquake of 1906. The properties are mainly on San Francisco’s major downtown streets including Market, Mission, Pacific, Post, Sutter, and Kearny. The prices recorded for these properties range between $50,000 to $350,000, with total sales listed at nearly $3,000,000. This album provides a stunning visual record of San Francisco just before the earthquake and fires destroyed eighty percent of the city. The properties range from single-story wooden commercial structures to massive stone buildings occupying entire city blocks. Buildings include hotels, saloons, residences, burlesque halls, a shooting gallery, cigar shops, groceries, and a billiard factory, often with poster-covered and paint-decorated facades. The scenes are typically filled with business signs, pedestrians, carriages, and wagons. Original photographs depicting San Francisco just before the 1906 earthquake are rare in the market. This album provides an irreplaceable visual record of the city. Although presumably copies were made for the several Fair heirs, we can trace no other examples, apart from an unannotated duplicate also owned by Mrs. Vanderbilt. Searches of WorldCat and Google turn up no other examples of Buildings of Fair Heirs in San Francisco, the title given on the binding. Provenance: Virginia “Birdie” Fair Vanderbilt (1875-1935). The properties documented in these albums were presumably originally purchased by James Graham Fair (1831-1894). Fair made his first fortune in the Comstock Lode and then became a major figure in California real estate and railroads. His daughter Virginia Graham Fair married William K. Vanderbilt II in 1899, and this album remained in the family for more than a century. Laid in are two letters from San Francisco real estate agent Thomas Magee to Mrs. Vanderbilt concerning the sales of various properties. 41 gelatin silver prints (6 1⁄4 x 8 3/8 in., with two panoramic views, 3 3⁄4 x 15 in.), mounted on card with maps and price annotations. Contemporary oblong album (13 3/4 x 16 in.) of soft black leather, gilt-lettered Buildings of Fair Heirs in San Francisco. Binding worn with covers nearly detached, interior with some stains, offsetting, and soiling, the photographs and maps generally in good condition.
