New York Scribner, Amstrong & Co. 1877 - 2 volumes. First Edition, 1877 issue. With 2 frontispieces, 37 other wood-cut illustrations both on full page plates and within the text and with three folding colour maps. Complete. 8vo, publisher’s original dark-green cloth ruled and decorated on the upper covers and spines in gilt and black, t.e.g. xii, 411; [x], 463 pp. A fine set indeed, very fresh, clean, crisp and beautifully preserved. As pristine and unused. Only the very faintest evidence of age. RARE IN THIS CONDITION, AN IMPORTANT, EVEN PRIMARY WORK ON CENTRAL ASIA. Schuyler, an American career diplomat, went to Turkistan in 1873 while serving as consul-general in St. Petersburg. Although the aim of his journey was to report on the political and social conditions to of the regions recently annexed by Russio, the result was no mere government study. Schuyler has produced an exceptionally detailed account of Central Asia, the Steppe, Syr Darya, Tashkent, Mussulman life, bazaars, trade, Samarkand, Zarafshan valley, Hodjent, Kurama, Khokand, Bukhara, Issyk Kul, Semiretch, Kuldja and the Russian foreign policy in Asia, their administration, Khivan campaign and its consequences. It also provides an exceptional comparison of the inhabitants living under the control of the Khans and those under Russian rule. Called "Monumental.a classic on the subject" by Yakushi.          Laughable Lyrics: a fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music, &c.

      - London: Robert John Bush, 1877. Sm. 4to, [64] ff., including 2 music plates, 10 botany plates, 26 alphabet plates, and 8 illustrations within text. Original green cloth, upper cover stamped in gilt and black and lettered in gilt, backstrip gilt-lettered, lower cover with small blind-stamped device. A fine copy with the bookplate of Babette and Herbert Clayburgh. With a lovely letter from Lear loosely inserted, including a drawing (see below). First edition of "Laughable Lyrics", the fourth nonsense book, and "last but not least" (Muir, p. 147) "included some of the best manifestations of Lear's rhythmic gifts and his flair for the invention of words?" (Thwaite, p. 127). "His work? provides an almost unique example of the perfectly matched text and picture? it was due to him that entertainment bulked larger than instruction in the late Victorian children's book" (Bland, p. 256).It contained some of his best known and also his saddest songs, including 'The Pelican Chorus', 'The Yonghy-bonghy-bo', and 'The Dong with a Luminous Nose'. Inserted is a hilarious ALS from Lear to "Your Ladyship": "I will be at Holman Hunt's by 5 this afternoon." and after a few lines describing Cheyne Walk Lear has drawn a street scene with the houses, the streets, and the river Thames. He notes: "A is Cheyne Walk & Prospect Place B the Church C the street to the right D an omnibus E Holman Hunt's door being no. 5. - R Ye River Thames SSS ye fishes TT ye little botes [sic]" and signed "Your Ladyship's very truly, Edward Lear."          Famine and other Indian Topics With a photograph of Vizagapatam

Madras: Addison & Co, 1877. Original photograph laid down as frontispiece, printed caption. [iv], 80 pp. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth, title gilt to upper board, a little soiled, discreet contemporary ownership inscription to title-page. Very good. Original photograph laid down as frontispiece, printed caption. [iv], 80 pp. 8vo. AN EARLY WORK ON DEFORESTATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE. Thomas's obituary notes that he "was an Indian civil servant, who, deeply impressed with the conviction that extensive engineering works, contructed and maintained by the Government, could alone cope with the evils of constantly recurring famines." He was appointed judge of Vizagapatam in August 1869 and held the position until 1882. During this time he devoted most of his energy to creating a harbor at Vizagapatam that would serve as a port for the central provinces of India. In this work, he addresses deforestation and its affect on climate and famine, namely that the increased prevalence of famine could be traced to the neglect of replanting the forests on the mountain slopes. "Thus we have ourselves caused the recent irregularity of the seasons - the droughts and the floods." OCLC: 436745383; cf. Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, vol. 99, London, 1890, pp. 403-4

Caldwell's Illustrated, Historical, Combination Atlas of Clarion County, Pennsylvania

      J. A. Caldwell . Engraved lithographed and printed by Otto Krebs, Pittsburgh, Condit, Ohio 1877 - (17 x 14 1/4 inches). 231 numbered pages, though with erratic page numbering. Numerous hand-coloured lithographed maps and views, and a large folding map of the county. (Folding map linen-backed repairing large tears, scattered minor repairs). Black cloth ledger binding, retaining the cloth from the original upper cover Clarion County atlas with hand colored maps and views relating to the early days of oil in Pennsylvania. This is one of four atlases of Western Pennsylvania counties, all lithographed and hand-coloured by Otto Krebs of Pittsburgh. The atlas is noteworthy for the presence of over 170 coloured lithographic views of farms, factories, stores, churches and bustling street scenes which offer a unique vision of all aspects of life in nineteenth-century Pennsylvania oil country. Nowhere is the Pennsylvania oil boom better illustrated than in the lithographed collage representing Beaver City where we find Emanuel Lutheran Church, a country church, literally surrounded on all sides by oil wells. Other illustrations showcase farms operating as oil producing centers or specific wells famous for their depth or production. Of further note are railroad scenes, printing shops, as well as ads for various services and educational institutions. As with most 19th century county atlases, the work was published strictly by subscription. Given the relatively small size of the county in terms of population, the atlas would not have been published in a large print run, resulting in its rarity today. "Despite their limitations and inaccuracies, nineteenth-century county atlases nonetheless preserve a detailed cartographical, biographical, and pictorial record of a large segment of rural America in the Victorian age" (Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers, p. 424).          The Various Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilized by Insects.

London: John Murray, 1877. - 8to. (7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches) Half titles. 5 full page woodcuts, 18 half-page woodcuts, 15 quarter page woodcuts (lightly toned throughout, loose front end paper). Original publisher's green cloth gilt (lightly rubbed, indentations, extremities bumped). Provenance: Manuscript ownership inscription of George Basalla to front free endpaper. Freeman's sale 1540 lot 177. Second edition. Considered by Darwin himself to be proof of his credibility after the controversial Origin of the Species was published. He wrote in a letter to his publisher, John Murray, that, "'I think this little volume will do good to the "Origin", as it will show that I have worked hard at details'. Later in his Autobiography he writes, "On May 15th, 1862, my little book on the Fertilisation of Orchids, which cost me ten months' work, was published: most of the facts had been slowly accumulated during several previous years. During the summer of 1839, and, I believe, during the previous summer, I was led to attend to the cross-fertilisation of flowers by the aid of insects, from having come to the conclusion in my speculations on the origin of species, that crossing played an important part in keeping specific forms constant. I attended to the subject more or less during every subsequent summer; and my interest in it was greatly enhanced by having procured and read in November 1841, through the advice of Robert Brown, a copy of C. K. Sprengel's wonderful book, Das entdeckte Geheimnis der Natur. For some years before 1862 I had specially attended to the fertilisation of our British orchids; and it seemed to me the best plan to prepare as complete a treatise on this group of plants as well as I could, rather than to utilise the great mass of matter which I had slowly collected with respect to other plants. My resolve proved a wise one; for since the appearance of my book, a surprising number of papers and separate works on the fertilisation of all kinds of flowers have appeared; and these are far better done than I could possibly have effected. The merits of poor old Sprengel, so long overlooked, are now fully recognised many years after his death" (Darwin 1876).).          Jerusalem. The Emanation of the Giant Albion. 1804.

Large 4to. [London: John Pearson, 1877]. Large 4to, 100 plates, printed in black and white, with black framing lines. Original blue-gray wrappers, textblock untrimmed, internally slightly foxed, wrappers mended at backstrip and at edges. Bookplate of Pamela and Raymond Lister. A wonderful facsimile of copy D (now at Harvard), limited to 100 copies per Bentley and Keynes but an old Quaritch catalogue stated 250 (an unlikely number). Bentley attributed the publication to Chatto but revised it to Pearson in his Blake Books supplement. The Rinder copy reproduced by the Trianon Press is in a smaller format and this large quarto has a much more imposing and appealing presence and seems to be a better facsimile - certainly this copy is clearer and more striking than copy C. Bentley, Blake Books, 76, and Blake Books Supplement, p. 88. As is well known, Blake made five copies of Jerusalem of which only one did he color , the other four all being b/w. A suite of 25 plates was also colored by Blake, and a few posthumous copies were printed in tints.

A Chinese Dictionary in the Cantonese Dialect.

London. Trubner. 1877. 3 volumes. Volume I: xxxv 404pp. Volume II: 405 - 1018pp. Supplement: xcviipp. Volume II: Lacks preliminary leaves prior to title page, but otherwise complete. Some worming particularly title page and first leaves but fortunately largely only affecting the margins of the leaves, indeed where letters have been lost, the sense of the sentence is still quite clear. All volumes recased, the first 2 volumes bound in early 20th maroon cloth and the supplement in black which is likely the original cloth. Each volume has modern endpapers, volumes I and II lettered in gilt on spine, new endpapers. Upper joint volume I torn with a little loss of cloth but still sound, some wear head and tail of spine, corners worn and bumped. Light even browning both volumes, note in black ink upper cover volumes I and II, some occasional spotting or marking. Cloth of Supplement volume damp marked, some occasional light soiling but overall text very good. Volumes I and II 23.8 x 15.5cm (25.4 x 17 binding) measure whereas the Supplement is a little larger at 24.5 x 15.7cm, (25 x 16.5cm binding). Ernst Johann Eitel (Ernest John Eitel, 1837-1908) was a German protestant missionary to China in the Canton area who later joined the Hong Kong civil government, where his knowledge of the languages and people of the province were of great assistance to the British authorities. He was also a prolific writer, whose works on Buddhism and on fengshui are being reprinted to this day on account of their abiding value. The Cantonese-English Dictionary is not least among his achievements.Several Cantonese-English dictionaries predate Eitel?s, the most significant being the 1856 one volume work by the eminent American missionary scholar, S. Wells Williams (1812-1884) best known for his major historical work, The Middle Kingdom, published in 1848 and in a revised edition of 1883. Wilhelm Lobscheid (1822-1890), another German missionary-scholar turned Hong Kong civil servant, published an English and Chinese Dictionary in Hong Kong in four parts between 1866-69 (Daily Press Office) which gave the Punti (Cantonese) and Mandarin pronounciations , and was afterwards (1883) enlarged and re- published as a single volume in Japan by a Japanese scholar, However, Eitel?s was the first properly Cantonese-English dictionary to appear in two regular volumes. It was later revised and enlarged further by Immanuel Gottlieb Genahr (1856-1937) yet another German missionary-scholar working in the Canton province [Guangdong] and published in 1910. This is the edition more commonly available today. The first edition is seldom if ever seen, which makes the present copy of greater interest to the specialist bibliophile. The supplement is even scarer still than the rare first edition.Strictly speaking, Cantonese is a language, not a dialect. The Eitel dictionary adopted the speech of the provincial capital, Canton, as the standard version of the spoken language, but there were, and to some extent still must be, many variations to be found within the regions of the province, including major dialects which were the subject of published articles by James Dyer Ball and other resident sinologues of the day, to be found in late 19th century issues of the China Review. In this situation, it is scarcely surprising that it is open to criticism by modern linguistic scholars like the late Wong Shik-ling (S.L. Wong) 1908-1959, of Lingnan and Hong Kong Universities, whose authoritative study of the language was published in Chinese in 1948. His observations would apply to all earlier works, but this is to be expected and in no way detracts from Eitel?s and others? achievements in bringing forward their important contributions to those westerners studying the language and to the promotion and understanding essential to meaningful cultural exchange. This copy of the first edition of Eitel?s Dictionary was bought in Hong Kong about 1970 or earlier, and is likely to have spent its whole life there, perhaps having been brought out for sale by the London publisher?s co-publisher, the famous local firm of Lane, Crawford & Co, founded in 1850 which continues to this day as the territory?s most prestigious local department store, with branches in China. The dictionary itself was re-bound in the early 20th century, and the worn title blocks were replaced very recently. It appears likely that the cloth the supplementary volume is bound in is the original. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 143958).

First edition of the first published collection of these early Greek philosophical writings, the whole => edited by Henri Estienne and from the Estienne press: An important Humanist gathering of surviving fragments from Empedocles, Parmenides, Xenophon, Cleanthes, Timon of Phlius, Epicharmus, and others, along with the letters of Heraclitus and Democritus -- with an emphasis on the aesthetics of their work. The preface is in both Latin and Greek, and the Latin notes are by Joseph Justus Scaliger.Schreiber calls this uncommon work "a volume of major importance to the history of Western thought, which rightly belongs on the same shelf with the first editions of Plato and Aristotle." Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Charles W.G. Howard on front pastedown with typed note that the volume was a gift of Sir David Dundas of Ochtertyre in 1877. Dundas (1799-1877) was a politician who also served as a trustee of the British Museum from 1861 to 1867 (DNB online).

Mémoires d'un Gommeux Par Saint-Patrice [pseud]

Paris: E. Dentu, 1877, 1877. First edition. OCLC records four locations (LC, Vanderbilt, BL and one in Italy). Fine copy.. 8vo, contemporary black morocco with coat-of-arms gilt-stamped on the upper and lower boards, gilt lettering and inner dentelles, a.e.g. Frontis and three plates. James Harden-Hickey's own copy of his third novel, Mémoires d'un Gommeux, with his quasi-bogus coat of arms and armorial insignias gilt-stamped on the binding. Harden-Hickey (1854-1898) was one of the most colorful and picaresque figures in 19th century Western literature. Born in San Francisco during the gold rush, he moved with his mother to Paris at an early age and during his formative years was effectively a Frenchman. He was flamboyant, adventurous and had serious delusions of grandeur, which he managed to in part fulfill by marrying wealthy women. He was made a baron of the Holy Roman Empire and years later when sailing the Atlantic, he noticed that the south Atlantic island of Trinidad had not been claimed by a country. He proceeded to claim it for himself. He took the title Prince James I of Trinidad and began selling Trinidad government bonds in New York City. The British seized Trinidad in 1895 and Harden-Hickey's dreams of his own country were over. He died in 1898 from an overdose of morphine in an El Paso, Texas hotel, a fitting end considering that one of the books he wrote was Euthanasia: the Aesthetics of Suicide (NY, 1894). In all Harden-Hickey wrote 12 books, several of them novels issued under the pseudonym Saint Patrice, and he edited the Paris newspaper Tribolet. Later bookplate of Jean-Marie Bernicat on the front paste-down and small oval ownership stamp of the same on the title-page.

Grape Vines. Grapes And Grape Vines Of California.

      - [San Francisco: Edward Bosqui, 1877] San Francisco: John Windle, 1980. Folio, [64] pp., 10 color plates with text. A fine copy in quarter wine red morocco and cloth boards lettered in gilt. Limited to 25 copies for sale in a binding; this exact facsimile of the first California ampelography to show the grapes in superb color printing by the renowned printer Bosqui was reissued by San Francisco printers and binders from one of the few extant perfect copies (now at the Lilly Library). It is the rarest of American color plate books and this wonderfully accurate facsimile has an introduction by Kevin Starr. The edition was not completed and only 65 sets were released (of which 25 were bound). Zamorano Select (2010) 34A writes that "in his valuable introduction to the Windle facsimile" Kevin Starr provides historical background for the original edition. "Both as a work on viticulture and as a color-plate book, 'Grapes and Grape Vines of California' was an unprecedented achievement for a California press" as indeed was the facsimile which was so impressive that Harcourt Brace Jovanovich reissued it in a reduced format trade edition that went through two large printings before being remaindered.          Lettera autografa firmata Leri 13 janvier (1860), 4 pagine in francese a François Buloz

Black Beauty: his grooms and companions. The autobiography of a horse. Translated from the original equine.

London: Jarrold and Sons, [1877] - Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in black and gilt, rear board blocked in blind, brown endpapers (Carter's B binding), edges trimmed. Housed in a custom red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Circular blindstamp to coated front endpaper. A little rubbing to extremities and a small area of scuffing to the top left corner of the front panel, light spotting to frontispiece recto, superficial cracking to rear hinge, an excellent copy. Engraved frontispiece after C. Hewitt. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front endpaper, "For Dearest Cousin Emma, with the Author's fond love, Christmas 1877"; in one of two primary bindings (Carter B). Together with two autograph letters signed from the author to Emma Curtis ("Dearest Cousin Emma"). The first is dated 26 December, sent shortly after this copy: "I sent you a book on the 22nd which I hope arrived safely & brought my love with it." The second, retaining the original mailing envelope, is dated 4 January [1878] and records Anna's delight that her cousin liked Black Beauty: "It is impossible for me to tell you all the pleasure that your letter gave me, but as you were an author before any of us, you may perhaps imagine it – I am delighted [underlined] that you like my book". A third accompanying note is a poignant reminder of the author's early death, a piece of mourning paper, "Dear Anna particularly requested her affectionate love to be sent to you – April 25, 1878", written by Grace Sewell on the day of Anna's death. An exceptional example in all respects. The recipient Emma Curtis was herself a published author, her works including Annie Barclay: or, Sketches of "The Society of Friends" by one nearly connected with, but not a member of their highly respected Society (1852) and Jottings of an Old Woman of Eighty (London 1852, 1853; 3rd ed. Brighton 1858). This Victorian classic was the only book of its bedridden author, who died shortly after its publication, much too soon to appreciate its slowly accumulated worldwide success. Presentation or inscribed copies are understandably rare and the majority are not inscribed by the author herself, but by her mother. In 1938 Carter distinguished three states of the binding: A with the same blocking as this, but all in gilt; B, as here, with the horse's head, titling, and the rustic portions of the decoration in black (Carter mistakenly describes the titling as gilt, which invariably leads to the B binding being described as a variant), the other parts being gilt; and C, blocked in black and gilt, with a much smaller horse's head gilt in a medallion, facing left, the same design as used for the later editions. Carter A and B are primary, and the earliest dated inscribed copies are Christmas 1877, as here. Publication date was 24 November 1877. Carter, More Binding Variants, pp. 37–38; Quayle, pp. 96–97.

         DEEPHAVEN

1877 - Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. Original mauve cloth decorated in black and gilt, all page edges red. First Edition, first state (with "was" at the end of the 16th line on p. 65, later changed to "so"), of Sarah Orne Jewett's first book. In addition to so-stated "fourth" and "fifth" printings dated 1877, there were three earlier printings dated 1877 that do not designate the printing on the title page -- of 1280, 500 and 500 copies; whether the two p. 65 states are 1780/500 copies or 1280/1000 copies is unknown.~The author, of South Berwick, Maine, first began writing these tales sited in the imaginary "Deephaven" for the Atlantic Monthly in 1868, when she was only nineteen. The book was an immediate success; it came at just the right moment, when the rage for genre regional studies of America was at its height and when fiction in general was at a low ebb. It made her famous at a bound; it sent her to Boston and New York and Philadelphia; it made her a friend of the "Boston circle," particularly of Howells, Lowell, Whittier, and Thomas Bailey Aldrich. [K&H]~This copy is in near-fine condition, remarkably clean for this light mauve cloth: there is light wear at the spine ends, and one endpaper has some cracking. This is tough book to find in better condition, as it was cheaply produced with flexible boards. Blanck 10871 (mentioning green or mauve cloth; we have also seen terra-cotta -- no priority).

. . VG+. "Etching, aquatint, dry point and burnisher, image 243 x 355 mm. on bone-tone laid paper leaves, ""Goya inv. et sc."".- // Very good state, hardly toned, with margins a little trimmed (287x394 mm.) in comparison to those of its original presentation (295x 432mm.).- /7 Prov.: No data.- // The first time that Goya's engravings of the series of the Disparates, unpublished at the time of his death, were printed, was in the edition that the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) commissioned in 1864. However, and due to various ups and downs, four of the original plates, which had been separated from the set at an earlier date, didn't arrive at the Academia and so these etchings didn't appear in that edition. Owned by the painter Eugenio Lucas, they were purchased after his death in 1870 by Edmon Sagote, and first printed in 1877 in volume IX of the Parisian L'Art. Revue hedomadaire illustrée, alongside the instalments of the article ""Goya, aquafortiste"" that Charles Yriarte wrote to provide context for the etching, before delivering the article that the magazine had requested from him about ""quatre planches de Goya, gravées à l'eau-forte, qu'on lui a présentées comme inédites, et qui seront publiées succesivement"", which he never got to deliver. In the magazine, at the moment of printing and lacking any other information, the etchings were entitled: Una reina del circo (A queen of the circus), Otras leyes para el pueblo (Other laws for the people), ¡Qué guerrero! (What a warrior!) and Lluvia de toros (Rain of bulls). The publication of the etchings may have been due to the interest shown by Paul Lefort, who in his catalogue of the work by the painter from Aragon, which appeared that very year, presented three of the four Disparates, from which he hadn't seen any impressions, but had seen the copperplates, which he didn't hesitate to accept as Goya's. Only when the artists' proofs of these plates were found, could it be seen that in the trial proof of this etching, kept at the Museo del Prado, in the lower margin of the image a title added in handwriting figured: Disparate de Bestia.- // Refs.: Lefort, 144; Museo del Prado, G03069.- // (1) Paul Lefort (1877): Francisco Goya, étude biographique et critique, suivie de l'essai d'un catalogue raisonné de son Suvre gravé et lithographié.- Paris: Librairie Renouard, p. 92-93, ref. 144."

Zamorano Select (2010) 34A writes that “in his valuable introduction to the Windle facsimile” Kevin Starr provides historical background for the original edition. “Both as a work on viticulture and as a color-plate book, ‘Grapes and Grape Vines of California’ was an unprecedented achievement for a California press” as indeed was the facsimile which was so impressive that Harcourt Brace Jovanovich reissued it in a reduced format trade edition that went through two large printings before being remaindered.

France [Lyon?] 1877 - Folio (35.1 x 26.4 cm). Title page in watercolour, two half titles, 84 pp. (all handwritten); many, partly numbered text illustrations; 48 samples and drawings, mounted. Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards, sprinkled edges. Some light offsetting of some of the mounted silk fabric samples, overall in exceptional state. Highly curious manuscript on silk manufacturing, unsigned but written in a neat, easily readable hand, containing colorful samples of woven silk tipped in. The manuscript deals with all aspects relating to silk weaving and contains many samples of woven textiles, in many different colors and patterns, each explained in detail. Chapters are arranged as follows: "Notice historique sur la soie," "Decomposition," and "Faconnes." The work contain illustrations and descriptions clarifying the weaving of intricate patterns. These chapters are supplemented with physical examples, many of which resemble colorful computer punch cards. Of particular interest to us is the chapter concerning the Jacquard Loom process ("Mechanique Jacquard"). The Jacquard Loom was the most complex programmable machine then in existence, for which thousands of punched cards were employed as automated weaving instructions to a mechanized loom. The incredible potential of Jacquard’s punched card system, with its binary data and disarmingly modern "input / output" capabilities, was seized upon by English visionary Charles Babbage (1791-1871), who integrated the process into his theoretical "Analytical Engine." James Essinger argues convincingly that the Jacquard Loom was pivotal in the in the development of computer science (see Jacquard’s Web: How a Hand-loom led to the Birth of the Information Age, 2004). It is of the greatest significance that present manuscript precedes the celebrated "Livre de Prières tissé" (1886-87) by almost 10 years (sic) which is justly considered to be the "first computer generated" book. With uncanny prescience, the data input mechanisms and intricate algorithms that were responsible for creating the present volume prefigure modern computer automation and computer programming. The Jacquard Loom process is described in the last chapter ("Faconnes") which is divided thusly: "Faconnes," "Mechanique Jacquard," "Operations relatives au tissage sur le metier a la Jacquard," "Empoutage," "Colletage," "Pendage," and "Appareillage." Then follows a section on the "Mise en carte" (transferring the design to ruled paper) and 10 fantastic actual examples of designs on ruled paper with the finished design realized in woven silk. Our attention is drawn to an extraordinary article in the 1836 "Mechanics' Magazine and Journal of the Mechanics Institute" (vol. 7, pp. 304-305) which contextualizes the present manuscript: "There is a school of design at Lyons. The young artists have, since the discovery of the Jacquard particularly, turned their attention to the mise en carte. There has been every augmentation of such young artists; indeed, there were no such artists before; for it was found requisite to set up Jacquard machines in the school of design. This lasted two or three years only, as they now obtain the required knowledge of the loom out of the school. The discovery of the Jacquard loom infinitely multiplied the number of young artists, who devoted themselves to the mise en carte. In France, in ordinary cases, our artists receive six months' instruction in the theory of the manufacture, before they are called into the field of practice, after they have been instructed in the school of design at Lyons; or artists, during their instruction, must pass two hours a day to understand the theory of the application of the design relative to the machine. There are private instructors who give those lessons in the school of design at Lyons; they also give instructions in the mise en carte, making their talent practical." It is very possible that our manuscript was created by one of the Lyonnais silk design students. This manus [Attributes: Soft Cover]
