Dutch Fortune-Teller,

1677 - All editions of this work are very rare: this edition is not in Wing. See also Zollinger, Manfred. Bibliographie der Spielbücher des. 15. 18. Jahrhunderts (Stuttgart, 1996), which lists an edition dated c. 1677 and with a different imprint but of which there are copies in The Hague (Koninklijke Bibliotheek) and at the Folger. According to Zollinger the c. 1677 edition has 10 tables (i.e. five double-page plates) - this copy has only two and is clearly missing at least three. The preface to the reader recounts the supposedly ancient origin of this work, not as a a game but as a quasi-mythoastrological work of divination, and traces its origins through the Germans to the Turks: ?Now the Turks . have it of the Aegyptians and other heathen Philosophers, which have described the same out of their natural Magick: they esteem the same very much; hence many of them do yet imitate it, and hold it not as we do, for a jest and sport, especially chief men in Banquets, and amongst Ladies, but for a very truth: and there may be something in it. Of the like matters much is mentioned here and there by diverse Authors, as Dr Robert Fludd writes of the like at large. And this it is not to be taken for a juggling, as if it came from the Aegyptians and Jugglers, much less for a Witchcraft or Black-Art, as Ignorants and Idiots usually understand it; Vale.?A question is posed, against which is a number, this number is then compared to a table of wheels and globes (not present in this copy). The dice are thrown, the sum of which is then identified with a number on the appropriate wheel which then directs the reader to one of four(?) tables, two of which are present here, and once the right spot on the table has been found a name and a number, combined with the original sum of the dice, direct the reader to the lists of 396 rhyming answers. The answers are printed in Black Letter in single columns of 11 versified answers each. The questions cover sickness, business, constancy, adventure, happiness, travel, life-expectancy, trust, success, livestock, marriage (including the number of wives or husbands and children one may expect), prosperity, love, and promise to tell the fortune of the inquirer in other respects as well. While some of the answers are obviously moral others are humourous in the damning indictment of a bad future: for example: ?Your husband will be very old/ Of feature grim, and nature cold,/ With rotten teeth, and stinking breath,/ That you each day will wish his death? and ?Breeding of Hogs is such a thing,/ As special luck will to you bring,/ Wash, Bran, or Grains, they feed on all,/ Or that which from your Wives back-side doth fall.?See also the ?lottery? game appended to George Wither's Emblemes.

De Sacrificiis libri duo; quorum altero explicantur omina Judaeorum, nonnulla gentium profanarum sacrificial: altero sacrificium Christi. Utroque ecclesiae Catholicae his de rebus sentential contra Faustum Socinum

London: T. Roycroft impensis Richardi Chiswell, 1677. First Edition. Hardcover. 4to. pp. [16], 372, [20] Title printed in red and black. Text is in Latin with quoted passages in Hebrew. Re-backed preserving original sprinkled calf boards. Upper corner of rear cover restored. End papers are renewed with quality laid paper after period style. Interior is clean. An inscription written in an old hand on a front blank leaf reads: "Ex domo Authoris Maii 4. 1677" (From the house of the author, May 4. 1677). William Owtram (1625-1679) was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. In 1669 Owtram became Archdeacon of Leicester and in 1670 he was made Prebendary of Westminster (1670). Richard Baxter spoke of him as " one of the best and ablest of the conformists." [DNB]. Owtram is mainly known for his learned work "De Sacrificiis libri duo" an in depth study of religious ritual sacrifice. The book is divided into two parts; part 1 treats of ritual sacrifice in general and of the Biblical Hebrew rituals in particular. The sacrificial practices of the Gentiles are also mentioned. Part 2 discusses the Christian concept of sacrifice in reference to the death of Christ on the cross. The entire work was written in large part to counter the Socinian (early Unitarian) concept that Christ's death was not atonement for humanity's sins. Owtram defends the doctrine of atonement through vicarious punishment in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures. He argues that Christ's death was an expiatory sacrifice which took away the sins of mankind. The book was also influential in Dutch Socinian debates. Two later editions were printed in Amsterdam … Of interest for Restoration Anglican history and for the history of Socinianism and Unitarianism. [ESTC R7355; McAlpin III, p. 754; Lowndes p. 1742].

Unsigned early 20th century three quarter calf, gilt labels, a.e.g. Foretips and spine extremities a bit rubbed, some faint old damp spotting and discoloration in the fore- margin, modest tanning and occasional smudges; a good copy. First edition. In this copy, C1 is in the canceled state, with the reading "Paul, I ne're expected...." The first work is an adaptation of Racine's BÉRÉNICE, and the latter of Molière's LES FOURBERIES DE SCAPIN. A relatively early publication in Otway's brief career: "Both tragedy and farce were acted on the same night in February 1676-7, and were published shortly afterwards in a single volume, which was dedicated to Lord Rochester. A reprint appeared in 1701. Mrs. Barry played in both pieces; Betterton only in the tragedy, where he took the role of Titus. The farce kept the stage till the present century. The approval bestowed on his version of ‘Scapin’ encouraged Otway to try his fortune in comedy..." - DNB NCBEL II:748. ESTC R9537. WING O566.

1677. Hard Cover. Good. [30], [1]-806, [18] pages. Early leather binding, hinges/joints quite cracked but cords are still holding. Lugduni, Sumpt Joan. Ant. Huguetan, & Soc. MDCLXXVII [ 1677 ]. "Bartholin, a Danish physician, naturalist, physiologist, and anatomist, was one of several seventeenth century researchers who greatly expanded the knowledge of the working anatomy of various glands and their ducts, the biliary system, and the lymphatic system. Bartholin is commonly credited with the first description of the thoracic duct in man and Jean Pecquet with recognizing it in animals a few years later." (Heirs of Hippocrates, 324) Published just 3 years before his death, this book is an anatomical textbook. Bartholin had updated his father Caspar Bartholin's anatomical work Institutione Anatomicae (1611) through at least three editions (first in 1641 recognizing the work of Aselli and Harvey, second in 1645 with the help of anatomist Johann Vesling, and third in 1651, with much updated text and new illustrations from Casserius and Vesling replacing earlier Vesalian figures). He is credited in 1654 with the discovery of the human lymphatic system. This edition was published in 1677, and includes 14 plates (12 folding), 97 labeled plates or "tabula" in the text plus 5 additional illustrations not labeled as "tabula". There are 3 instances where the sequential numbering of tabula might normally indicate a missing illustration (XXXII before page 212, XLIX before page 296, and VIII before page 754). In each case, we believe the book complete, and each a case of simple mis-labelling and the inconsistent treatment of folding plate numbering. Plate XLIII has some material lacking (part of the paper manufacturing process) with no loss of context or meaning. There is some minor marginal worming in the front matter, and on pages 473-484, 504-518, and 531-539. One tabula (XI) is mislabeled IX. This copy lacks the engraved portrait of the author found in some copies opposite the first page of text. Extra engraved pictorial title present. Minor occasional soiling. Pencilled notations on the endpapers. Generally a good copy. Full title: Archiatri Danici, Anatome Quartum Renovata : Non Tantum Ex Institutionibus b. m.          Cosmography in Four Books. Containing the Chorography and History of the Whole World and all the Principal Kingdoms, Provinces, Seas and Isles Thereof

London - P. Chetwind and A. Seile, 1677 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An importantseventeenth century scientific work mapping and describing in meticulous detail the history andfeatures ofevery part of the knownworld. Includes a dedicatorypoem written by the author's brother. With decorative head and tail pieces and capitals. Four books bound into one. Incorrect pagination in the second part, but bound in the correct order, as usual with this edition. Correct pagination has been discreetly written in ink for this section. Text is complete. Cosmography is the science that maps the general features of the universe, describing both heaven and Earth (but without encroaching on geography or astronomy). Peter Heylyn's 1652 book Cosmographie (enlarged from his Microcosmos of 1621) was one of the earliest attempts to describe the entire world in English, and being the first known description of Australia and among the first of California. The book has 4 sections, examining the geography, politics, and cultures of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, with an addendum on Terra Incognita, including Australia, and extending to Utopia, Fairyland, and the Land of Chivalrie. Peter Heylyn (15991662), Church of England clergyman and historian. He gained early renown for his geographical works. After graduating BA in October 1617 he began to lecture on historical geography in the college, and was elected a fellow of Magdalen in the following year. After proceeding MA in 1620 he published his lectures as Microcosmos: a Little Description of the Great World (1621) and secured its presentation to its dedicatee, Prince Charles, at Theobalds. This proved his most popular work, going through no fewer than eight editions by 1639. From his early years Heylyn was also active as a poet. At a later age he recollected his early poems with pleasure, and continued writing them into the early 1630s, when he dedicated poems to Charles I and William Laud. He had a particular taste for satire, enthusiastically translating epigrams by Martial as well as composing a Latin comedy, Theomachia, and a derisory poem against Barten Holyday entitled Whoop Holiday, and in 1625 he composed a lengthy satirical account of his trip to France, which went through several editions in the 1650s. Heylyn attended the notorious convocation of 1640, where he seems to have played an important role in proposing and drawing up a standard set of visitation articles to be adopted for the whole country and in proposing the canon calling for greater observance of the king's accession day, as well as providing the necessary precedent of 1586 to justify the continued sitting of convocation after the dissolution of parliament. In Oxfordshire in the 1650s Heylyn resumed his writing. He published the strongly clericalist The Undeceiving of the People in the Point of Tithes, his substantial commentary on the creed (Theologia veterum), and perhaps his most famous work, the Cosmographie. Published in 1652 this was an enormous and highly popular expansion of his earlier Microcosmos into a folio volume of nearly a thousand pages, and was sufficiently well regarded that the council of state saw fit to obtain a copy for their better instruction. The polarized view of the Church of England that Heylyn propounded has meant that he has been alternately praised and vilified by succeeding generations of scholars and churchmen. His works found their most enthusiastic audiences in the midst of the polarized religious politics of the 1670s and 1680s. His major works were regularly reprinted in the 1670s, and in 1681 a substantial collected volume of his previous works was published, followed by two biographies. DNBCondition: Rebound in half morocco. Externally excellent with just a little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Remarkably bright and clean for the age of this book, with just the odd spot. Regrettably this copy is missing the four folding maps that shouldbe bound inat the start of each section. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Daniel Elzevir 1677 In 8° (196x143); carte numerate 37, pagg. 239. Garrison-Morton : " This book was the first attempt to over the whole field of animal physiology ."
