      Venezia 1561 - Copper engraving, mm 190x260. This world map is included in Ruscelli's translation of Ptolemy's Geographia, printed by Vincenzo Valgrisi. It is a slightly enlarged version of the map which appeared in Gastaldi's edition of Ptolemy thirteen years earlier. The map is adapted from the oval projection used in Gastaldi's larger world map and is presented on Roger Bacon's circular projection, also used by Tramezzino's large world map of 1554. No southern continent is shown. The map clearly shows the broad mass of land joining Asia and America as Terra Incognita and the coastline as Littus Incognitum. At one time, it was believed that the printer was Valgrisi, but it is now believed that the brothers Guilio and Livio Sanuto were the source of the map. Subsequent editions appear in the 1562, 1564 and 1574 editions of Ruscelli's work. The map also appears in the 1582 edition of Lorenzo D'Anania's L'Universale Fabrica Del Mondo.First state: this map is one of two that were engraved on the same plate, printed and than separated for the book. This can be seen in the atlas by the fact that the plate mark of the map runs off the top of the page. Fijando, por ejemplo, la atención solo en el trienio 1560-1562 que envuelve a esta obra, puede verse que Sansovino escribió una "Historia universal de los turcos sacada de los mejores autores" (que fue ampliando y corrigiendo a lo largo de los años), la antología de "Cien cuentos escogidos" (con numerosas reediciones), las "Observaciones de personajes importantes" (igualmente reeditada en numerosas ocasiones), las "Cartas de Bembo a Cardenales, príncipes y otros altos dignatarios" y las "Oraciones de hombres ilustres". al mismo tiempo que, en lo científico, publicaba el texto enciclopédico "Agricultura sacada de los mejores autores", que quiso disimular como obra de un tal Giovanni Tatti, que no era sino un seudónimo, esta enciclopedia de productos medicinales "Cuatro libros de materia médica", la traducción de la "Agricultura" de Crescencio (1561) y la de "Los Secretos medicinales" de Pietro Bairo (1562). (Más tarde, en 1577, también tradujo la "Agricultura" del español Herrera). En lo que hace a su "Materia medicinale", el primero de sus cuatro libros es un compendio de plantas y frutos con virtudes médicas elaborado por Sansovino donde cada una de las 195 variedades que incluye recoge lo que dijeron desde Dioscórides, a quien da preeminencia, hasta Crescenzio, pasando por Galeno, Plinio, Mesue, etc., acompañando cada recensión con una imagen de la planta, xilografiada con sumo detalle. Y aquí salta la sorpresa: sin ninguna duda los tacos xilográficos que utilizó fueron los que desde 1554 empleaba Vincenzo Valgrisi, diseñados a su costa por Giorgo Liberale, en sus continuas ediciones de los "Comentarios a los seis libros de materia medicinal de Dioscórides" de Mattioli (ver nuestra ficha C-0083). Inaudito, porque (./.) El repertorio de Sansovino es raro en comercio y tanto los ejemplares que ocasionalmente aparecen, como la mayoría de los conservados en bibliotecas, poseen fecha de 1562 en portada y colofón. Este que ofrecemos presenta, sin embargo, portada y colofón datados en 1561. Se trata, sin duda, de un ejemplar de la tirada preliminar. Valles, como Erasmo, era contrario a la transmisión del saber dogmático y al método escolástico y, como Erasmo, creía que la mayoría de los profesores de su tiempo se limitaban a repetir doctrinas dándolas por ciertas y a hacerlas repetir a sus estudiantes. Ambos tenían la peor de las consideraciones posibles sobre el funcionamiento de la enseñanza universitaria de su tiempo. Para Valles, en Medicina se requería cotejar lo que estaba dicho sobre las diferentes enfermedades y sus posibles terapias con los síntomas y las reacciones observadas por uno mismo en casos reales de la misma enfermedad, tanto si las observaciones ratificaban las recogidas en los textos de Hipócrates, de Galeno y de los comentaristas anteriores, especialmente Avicena, como si esas observaciones informaban de aspectos no recogidos o, especialmente, si ofrecían contradicciones. De ese modo, frente a los libros de Medicina que se limitaban a interpretar los asertos de los clásicos, los libro valiosos tenían que incluir comentarios que, dando cuenta de ese conjunto de evidencias, expusieran las conclusiones que podieran deducirse teniendo en cuenta, además, las observaciones que otros médicos del momento hubieran dado a conocer de esas mismas enfermedades y manifestaciones fisiológicas. Así, desde el punto de vista heurístico, por la preponderancia que otorgaba al valor de la observación clínica, Valles se mostraba más hipocrático que galénico. Por eso Valles encaró ambos legados acometiendo la tarea de traducir de nuevo los textos originales del griego (al latín) y de comentarlos con ese patrón humanista que él mismo exigía tanto en el ejercicio de la labor científica, como en el de la labor didáctica. Un ejemplo palmario es esta primera edición, impresa en 1561, de sus traducciones y comentarios de los "Aforismos" y del librito "Del Alimento" de Hipócrates. Resulta especialmente relevante la traducción del tratadito "Del Alimento", al que durante la edad media se había prestado una atención menor debido a que Galeno había afirmado en su día que no era de Hipócrates. Esa marginación está en el origen de apenas hubiese versiones latinas y que, de ese modo, Valles pudiera decir que lo sacaba de la oscuridad. De hecho, sin duda por torpeza nuestra, solo localizamos una versión anterior a la de Valles; la que Janus Cornarius incluyó, sin comentar su contenido, en sus ediciones de "Hippocratis omnium longe principis, opera quad apud nos extant omnia", desde 1546. The maps are slightly enlarged versions of those of Jacopo Gastaldo (which had previously appeared in Mattioli's 1548 translation of Ptolemy) with several notable additions. Amongst the most important of these is the second appearance (and first widely circulated) of the famed Zeno map. It shows Greenland connected to Norway in the north, and two land masses which are believed to correspond to Labrador and Newfoundland. The map was first published in Venice in 1558 by Nicolo Zeno, a descendant of a person by the same name, Nicolo Zeno, of the Zeno brothers. The younger Zeno published the map, along with a series of letters, with the claim that he had discovered them in a storeroom in his family's house in Venice. According to his claim, the map and letters were made around the year 1400 and purport to describe a voyage by the Zeno brothers made in the 1390s under the direction of a prince named Zichmni. The voyage supposedly traversed the North Atlantic and, according to some interpretations, reached North America. Among the other maps are ten of American interest, including a general map of South America; a detailed map of Brazil; another of Mexico, Baja California, the Gulf Coast and Florida; a map of New England; one of Cuba; and one of Hispaniola. The map of Mexico and the Gulf Coast is of considerable importance. Its appearance in the first Gastaldi edition marked the first map devoted to New Spain to appear in an atlas. That issue, though an improvement over previous depictions, included errors such as showing the Yucatan peninsula as an island. The present Ruscelli edition, however included several important corrections and improvements, including the correct mapping of the Yucatan. "The place names along the upper Gulf Coast revealed the explorations of Pineda, Cabeza de Vaca, and Moscosso, and the Mississippi, here shown as the Rio de Spiritu Santo was carefully depicted" (Martin & Martin). First issue of the Stowe Edition with Chaucer's arms dated 1560 and before later woodcut additions. Relative to the precedence of issues of the 1561 Stowe edition David R. Carlson ("The Woodcut Illustrations in Early Printed Editions of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales," in Chaucer Illustrated: Five Hundred Years of The Canterbury Tales in Pictures [British Library, 2003]) states "the most plausible explanation seems to be that the printer and publisher of the [Stowe] edition, came into possession of the woodcuts belatedly after most of the press work for the edition had been done. After obtaining the blocks, they ran up a new issue of the beginning of the book, incorporating a "General Prologue" illustrated with woodcut. In all documented cases, the unillustrated [i.e. first]"General Prologue" occurs with a title page showing the Chaucer arms, dated 1560 at the top of the shield. A different title-page, dated 1561, is found in copies incorporating the [woodcut] illustrated General Prologue…." (v. also David R. Carlson, "Woodcut Illustrations of the Canterbury Tales, 1483-1602). More specifically a recent Robert Temple Catalogue adds: "The first three gatherings [in the 1561 second issue] … were entirely reprinted, this being done to permit the inclusion of twenty-two wood-cut illustrations in the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales the signatures running [floret]4 ([floret]iii being mis-signed Aiii), +6, A4, B - I6. instead of the [floret]4, A - I6. of the [first] issue. In the illustrated [i.e. second] issue some damage to the wood-cut frame of the first secondary title is apparent which is not evident in the [first] issue: a crack in the wood extends from the centre of the lower edge, up through the box identifying King Henry IIII to just left of centre of the title box, and another from the top left-hand corner of the title-box, through the box identifying King Henry VII and ending, apparently at a worm-hole, in its top rules. STC, 2nd edition, unaccountably and without assigning a reason, lists these two issues in the reverse order - despite the evidence in the illustrated issue of the later date on the title-page, the obviously interpolated gathering `+' (which contains the first six illustrated leaves of ten, the rest being in the variant, short, gathering `A'), and the extended splitting of the wood-block on the title-page to the Canterbury Tales which shows only a slight split at the extreme tail in the [first] printing, and no worm-hole." Professional restoration to the present copy include wash and repair of title page with ancient replacement of top inch and periphery of same not affecting text; repapering of Prologue gutters; new pastedowns & fly papers. All that said, a complete copy without loss of text. Light peripheral worming. Handsomely bound in appropriate period style full ruled English calf, five raised bands, six compartments; morocco title & date labels. This copy was presented by the Durants to Wellesley College then sold in 1912 to George Herbert Palmer & then to Lewis Kennedy Morse. Divisional title pages of the "Caunterburie Tales" and "Romaunt of the Rose" (both borrowed from Edward Hall's 1550 Vnion of the two noble and illustre famelies of Lancastre & Yorke) in ornamental border, showing the ascent of Henry VIII. The 1561 Stowe edition is probably the one known to William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser and presents some nineteen poems here first printed from manuscript sources. The first three editions were all printed in Seville, and published in 1548, 1550 and 1554. Chaves was a distinguished mathematician, cosmographer, and poet living in Seville, and the first occupant of the chair for cosmography at the Casa de Contractacion. He was one of the first cosmographers to publish a map of the New World, appearing on the verso of leaf 68 in this edition. Chaves's New World map is an early and notable map of North and South America. Burden notes that the map "does show knowledge of some of the latest geographical findings; the Gulf of California and Cartier's expeditions in Canada. The Yucatan is correctly shown as a peninsula." The map is surrounded by twelve named windheads. The map of the Eastern Hemisphere names the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The illustrations include several representations of solar eclipses with their future dates of occurrence up until 1600, as well as astrological symbols (with attendant tables). European Americana states that the first Gutierrez edition printed in Seville appeared in 1566, inexplicably neglecting to note the present edition. The present edition is listed in Palau, who also locates a copy in the British Museum that is without a date but is assumed to be 1561. OCLC and NUC together locate only four additional copies of this 1561 edition, at the University of Arizona, Dartmouth, Indiana University, and the John Carter Brown Library. First edition of the Italian translation by Giuseppe Horologgi of Les Singularitez de la France Antarctique, first published at Paris in 1557, a most important first hand account of Thevet’s journey to Brazil. Thevet, a Franciscan, accompanied Villegagnon on a French expedition in 1555 to establish a colony on the coast of Brazil. This important narrative of that unsuccessful venture contains one of the earliest descriptions of tobacco and its use by the Indians, as well as descriptions of Peru, Cuba, and Canada, the latter account derived from Jacques Cartier. Giolito reissued this translation in 1584. An English translation appeared in 1568. Thevet’s first travels occurred in about 1550, when he accompanied the Cardinal Jean de Lorraine on a journey into Italy and the Mediterranean basin. His experience as a traveler attracted the attention of Nicolas Durand, Chevalier de Villegagnon, who was preparing to found a colony in what is today Brazil. He asked Thevet to accompany the expedition as its confessor. Thevet fell ill during the voyage and had to return to France after only ten weeks in Brazil. Using his own observations, however, combined with information gained from other travellers, Thevet quickly produced his ‘Singularitez de la France Antarctique’ on his return. Thevet writes here in detail of that attempt to form a colony, and includes vivid descriptions of the manners and customs of the natives whom he met. It seems probable, however, that his accounts of North America, which form a large portion of this book, and which he claims are based on first hand knowledge, derived mainly from conversations with Jacques Cartier, Sebastian Cabot, and the Sieur de Roberval. Nevertheless he gives one of the earliest descriptions of Canada, one of the earliest accounts of Newfoundland and Labrador, and one of the earliest discussions of the customs and ceremonies of the Indians, including a marvellous description of tobacco-smoking (p. 333). André Thevet traveled extensively and wrote prolifically. Few sixteenth-century writers covered more territory or wrote more ambitiously. While today Thevet is seen largely as a compiler and editor of experiences that belonged to others, his work on Brazil remains important to those studying the first encounters with the New World.       - Rare map depicting what is now Slovenia and Northwestern Croatia by Bolognino Zaltieri, the only map of Carniola produced by the ‘Lafreri School’ This rare map of Carniola and the Windic Mark, by cartographer Bolognino Zalteri, embraces Slovenia, Carinthia, northern Istria and northwestern Croatia. It is the only map of Carniola produced by the 16th Century Italian school (Meurer, The Strabo Atlas, no. 34). It was based, in good part, on Wolfgang Lazius’ Ducatus Carniolae et Histriae una cum Marcha Windorum, published in Vienna in 1561. Wolfgang Laz (1514-1565), better known as Lazius, was an Austrian humanist scholar who was an accomplished cartographer, historian, and physician. Lazius became professor of medicine at the University of Vienna in 1541, and was subsequently appointed curator of the imperial collections of the Holy Roman Empire and the official historian to Emperor Ferdinand I. Between 1541 and his death, Lazius published revolutionary maps of Austria and Hungary, based upon his observations, official documents and various manuscript maps found in monastic collections. His atlas Typi chorographici provin. Austriae (1561) contained the first ‘modern’ set of maps of Austria. Impressively, the atlas’ 11 maps were all drawn in an ovoid form, mounted on the breast of the Habsburg double-headed eagle. Zalteri did not entirely rely on Lazius’ map, as he made several significant changes of his own. He omitted some of the names and translated others from German to Latin. He also shortened the description of the legend of the Argonauts, who were said to have sailed from the River Sava to the Ljubljanica River, whereupon they disassembled their ships at Vrhnika (Oberlaibach) before carrying them to the Adriatic Sea. Zalteri, who was based in Venice, was much better acquainted than was Lazius with the coastal Adriatic regions that were then in the possession of the Serene Republic. Consequently, he corrected the misidentification of the towns of Capodistria and Muggia, which were confused for one another by Lazius. Yet, on the other hand, Zalteri included the imaginary island of Egida, the Adriatic’s most beloved cartographic myth, situated just to the south of Capodistria. Aegida or Egida was actually the Ancient Greek name for Capodistria, based upon the legend of the goddess Athena dropping her shield (Greek: ‘aegis’) into the sea while engaged in battle near the Istrian coast. It was said that the shield became an island, upon which the town of Capodistria was later built. Aegida was mentioned by Pliny the Elder as a merchant town on the Istrian coast and, from that point, the myth gained life. In the succeeding centuries Aegida it was often misinterpreted as a different island. However, Pietro Coppo’s groundbreaking 1520s survey of Istria definitely proved that the island did not exist. In the center of the map is Lake Cerknica, a natural phenomenon of the Karst landscape that was one of the most famous landmarks in Southeastern Europe. Amazingly, the lake would practically disappear in the autumn for several months, sometimes even for more than a year, before suddenly reemerging in the spring to swell to a great size. The lake was often represented on the maps of Austria and the Balkans as being much larger than its actual size. Even Abraham Ortelius, who also used Lazius as his source, represented the lake as a smaller sea in the middle of Carniola. Lazius’ and Zaltieri’s maps are rare examples which depict Lake Cerkinca as it would appear during the dry season, concentrating on the mostly underground channels of water. The lake was the source of much fascination amongst scholars from Roman to modern times, but it was only during the 18th Century that credible explanations were proposed for its mysterious nature.       - This highly decorative piece is the most influential map of the Middle East and adjacent regions made during the 16th Century, issued after the Ottoman armies had surged out of Turkey to form a great empire. The map embrace the vast region extending from Europe’s Danube Valley, in the northwest, down to Libya, in the southwest, and over past the Arabian Peninsula to the Indian Ocean, in the southeast, and up to region of Samarkand, in the northeast. Overall, the geography is quite progressive, being broadly recognizable to the modern observer. It is predicted on Giacomo Gastaldi’s fantastic and incredibly rare map, Il Disegno della Seconda Parte dell’Asia (Venice, 1561), which is itself based on stolen Portuguese manuscript charts. The Arabian Peninsula is quite well formed, and the Red Sea (‘Mare de Mecca’) is shown with a high degree of correctness, although the Sinai Peninsula is not outlined. The Persian Gulf (‘Mare Elcatif’) is well-shaped, although the great rivers, such as the Euphrates and Tigris, assume somewhat conjectural courses, owing to the fact that few Europeans had recently explored the interior. Further north, the Caspian Sea assumes the egg-like shape is had on all maps made prior to the 1730s. In the Mediterranean, Turkey and the Levant is easily recognizable, while the Nile Valley takes on a simplified, but broadly accurate form. Important centres such as Constantinople, Cairo, Jerusalem, Damascus, Mecca, Aden, Muscat, Hormuz, and Bahrain are noted, while further annotations feature descriptions of certain locations. The composition is completed by the magnificent Mannerist title cartouche in the lower left. The map is historically important and was highly influential during its era as the most recognizable and authoritative map of the Ottoman Empire depicted during its apogee. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-66), the Ottoman armies extended their conquests far beyond Turkey, conquering Southeastern Europe, almost the Gates of Vienna; all of the Middle East; North Africa as far west as Algeria; and much of the Arabian Peninsula, along the coasts of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. For almost three centuries the Ottomans would preside over one of the grandest and wealthiest empires the world had ever seen. The present example represents Ortelius’s second edition of the map. The first edition was printed between 1570 and 1579 and was substantively the same as the second edition, except for that the title cartouche was different. It appears that the copperplate used for the first edition became worn down and was discarded. The second edition was engraved on an entirely new plate and the first issue was printed in 1579. The present example is from a German text edition of the Ortelius’s atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, and was printed sometime between 1580 and 1589. Abraham Ortelius (1527-98) is widely hailed as the ‘The Father of Modern Cartography,’ being the compiler of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (meaning ‘Theatre of the World’), first issued in Antwerp in 1570. Ortelius was a shrewd businessman who went to great lengths to obtain the finest possible source maps and to engrave works of great artistic beauty and intellectual merit. He was the earliest map mogul, as his publishing concern was the first cartographic enterprise to become a great international commercial empire. Ortelius’s maps were the most popular and widely recognized of his time and they had an enduring influence as numerous mapmakers copied them for many decades after his death. Ortelius’s map is anchor piece for any collection of maps of the Middle East and its constituent countries and the present offering is an especially fine example, with full original colour.       Simon Johann Arnold's edition of Bacon's collected works, translated into Latin from the original English, published simultaneously at Leipzig and Copenhagen. Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), in addition to rising to the office of Lord Chancellor, was a prolific and lively-minded writer, noted by the Oxford Companion to English Literature as "capable of varied and beautiful styles" and as exhibiting "a peculiar magnificence and picturesqueness in much of his writing." This Opera is a more complete collection of Bacon's literary, scientific, and philosophical productions than the first, which was published in 1665. The extremely rare fourth edition of Chaves' important early work on chronography and astronomy, featuring an early map of the New World. The first edition appeared in Seville in 1548, followed by editions printed in that same city in 1550 and 1554. Chaves (1523-74) was a distinguished mathematician, cosmographer, and poet living in Seville, and the first occupant of the chair for cosmography at the Casa de Contractacion. He was one of the first cosmographers to publish a map of the New World, appearing on the verso of leaf 68 in this edition. Chaves' New World map is an early and notable map of North and South America. Burden notes that the map "does show knowledge of some of the latest geographical findings; the Gulf of California and Cartier's expeditions in Canada. The Yucatan is correctly shown as a peninsula." The map is surrounded by twelve named windheads. The map of the Eastern Hemisphere names the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The illustrations include several representations of solar eclipses with their future dates of occurrence, as well as astrological symbols (with attendant tables). EUROPEAN AMERICANA states that the first Gutierrez edition printed in Seville appeared in 1566, inexplicably neglecting to note the present edition. The present edition is listed in Palau, who also locates a copy in the British Museum that is without a date but is assumed to be 1561. OCLC and NUC together locate only four additional copies of this 1561 edition, at the University of Arizona, Dartmouth, Indiana University, and the John Carter Brown Library. Very rare, and with an important map.

He began as a map-engraver, in 1547 and entered the Antwerp guild of St Luke as afsetter van Karten. His early career is that of a businessman and most of his journeys before 1560 are for commercial purposes. In 1564 he completed a mappemonde, eight-leaved map of the world, which afterwards appeared in reduced form in the Theatrum. The only extant copy of this great map is in the library of the University of Basle (cf. Bernoulli, Ein Karteninkunabelnband, Basle, 1905, p. 5). He also published a two-sheet map of Egypt in 1565, a plan of the Brittenburg castle on the coast of the Netherlands in 1568, an eight-sheet map of Asia in 1567, and a six-sheet map of Spain before the appearance of his atlas. Last of the early editions of the Great Herbal, corrected with improved layout, and spelling and orthography modernized for the Elizabethan reader. Interestingly, in the 35 years since Treveris' first edition, the Herbal has physically changed from a clearly medieval to an identifiably modern book. "The most famous of all the early printed herbals" (Rohde, 65), it is now extremely rare. It was largely based upon Le Grant Herbier (Paris: Jacques Nyverd, 1520 - Renouard III, 124); both works owe much to the Herbarius zu Teutsch (Mainz 1485). The Grete Herball contains remedies for everything from melancholy to baldness, invoking God and the Virgin Mary alongside Diana and the Centaurs. It is profoundly utilitarian in approach, and designed to be accessible to a relatively broad public, as may be seen from its publication in English rather than Latin; accordingly copies have always suffered heavy use. The Herball "contains much that is curious, especially in relation to medical matters. Bathing was evidently regarded as a strange fad. ( ) Water drinking seems to have been thought almost equally pernicious" (Arber, Herbalis, 42). The descriptions of less common remedies, such as the lodestone, often incorporate vivid travellers' tales. The author displays pride and integrity in his profession, warning against peddlers of harmful fake remedies. The book contains a glossary of urines and of uncommon words, and a self-consciously useful index: "Here after foloweth a Table, very necessary and profitable for them that desyre to fynde quickely a remedy agaynste all maner of diseases, and they be marked by the letters of the A.B.C. in every chapytre". Sixth edition of this very influential Italian cosmography paired with a much important illustration of the Ptolemaic constellations, originally published together in 1540. The same year as this edition, another more common reprint by Varisco appeared in Venice. The scion of a papal family in Siena, Alessandro Piccolomini (1508-1578) was a leading Renaissance humanist, philosopher, dramatist and astronomer. He was a founding member of many Italian academies, notably the Intronati and Infiammati. After teaching philosophy in Padua, he moved to Rome and Siena to started an ecclesiastical career, which eventually led him to being appointed archbishop of Patras. A partisan of the Italian vernacular, he intentionally avoided Latin in his numerous works. They comprise a couple of moral comedies, collections of his letters and sonnets, several philosophical treatises and translations of classical authors, as well as his famous astronomical essays. Among them, La Sfera and Le Stelle fisse stand out for accuracy and success. The first describes the universe following the traditional Ptolemaic-Aristotelian geocentric cosmography, while the second contains one of the earliest star atlases to be published in the Western World. All of Ptolemy’s 48 constellations, save Equuleus, were displayed without the traditional depiction of related animals. Piccolomini introduced here the practice of identification of stars by Latin letters, which was adopted using the Greek alphabet by Johann Bayer some seventy years later. The lunar crater Piccolomini is named after him. Rare. Only two copies recorded in the US (Harvard and Pittsburg). Not in Adam, BM STC It. or Riccardi. [121 x 77 x 44 mm]. 854, [66] pp. Bound in contemporary brown goatskin, the covers with a border of double gilt fillets between triple blind fillets, a panel of double gilt fillets between triple blind fillets with a fleuron at the outer corners, and at the centre two gilt geometrical ornaments. Rebacked in the style of the original with eight panels tooled with gilt and blind fillets, new endleaves, the edges gilt, gauffered and painted, with abbreviated title written in ink on lower edge. (Missing ties, the edges of the boards repaired). An early ink signature has scorched two holes in the title, which also has two other small holes. Occasional light browning and spotting but a good copy. Dionysius of Halicarnassus, the Greek historian and teacher of rhetoric, flourished during the reign of Caesar Augustus. He went to Rome in 30 B.C. and spent 22 years studying Latin and preparing materials for Antiquitates Romanae. This major work embraced the history of Rome from the mythical period to the beginning of the First Punic War. It was divided into 20 books, of which the first nine are entire, the tenth and eleventh are nearly complete and the remaining books exist only in fragments.

Woodcut printer's devices on title-pages and at end of part 2, 64 engraved double-page maps mounted on guards, comprising 27 maps of the ancient world and 37 maps of the modern world with letterpress descriptive text on rectos, woodcut diagrams throughout, woodcut initials (first title-page supplied, and a bit short, some light, mostly marginal waterstaining throughout, front endpaper with wormtracks). Contemporary vellum over paste-board, title lettered in gilt on the spine (a bit marked); preserved in a modern red cloth clamshell box. Provenance: obscured contemporary Italian ownership inscription and ink library stamp offset onto front free endpaper from original title-page; replaced title-page with the ink library stamp of the convent of San Michele in Bosco, Bologna at the foot. First edition of Girolamo Ruscelli's Italian translation of Ptolemy's "Geography". Most of the maps are enlarged copies of the Gastaldi maps from the Venice 1548 edition made by Giulio and Livio Sanuto: notable maps include: "Septemtronalum partium nova tabula" , a reduced version of the Nicolo Zeno map of the North Atlantic Ocean of 1558 and including many ficticious islands; "Tierra Nueva", a map of the east coast of North America showing the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers; "Nueva Hispania Tabula Nova" showing the Yucatan as a peninsula; other maps of America are "Tierra Nova showing South America, "Brasil Nuova Tavola", "Isola Cuba Nova", and "Isola Spagnola Nova"; "India Tercera Nuova Tavola" shows the East Indies; and "Orbis Discriptio" the twin hemisphere new world map, which as Shirley reports, is the earliest of its kind to appear in an atlas, shows not only North and south America, but also the islands of New Guinea.       Valladolid, 1561 - . 33 cm. 39 h., escritas por ambas caras en bella caligrafía (número variable de líneas/página), sin paginar, todas rubricadas. Enc. en piel de época, nervios, hierros secos en ambos planos, cortes pintados. Hoja de respeto de pergamino. Firmas y restos de sello al final. En primera instancia, el pleito se trató ante el comendador del monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Santa Maríaa de la Merced de Valladolid (edificio hoy desaparecido), juez público por la autoridad apostólica. Enfrenta a Cristóbal y Francisco Ayala y otros y los curas, clérigos y feligreses de la iglesia de Santiago de Castrojeriz por la construcción de un arco entre dos capillas. Hernán López del Campo, factor general de su Majestad, construye un arco entre la capilla mayor y la de San Antón de dicha iglesia. El documento transcribe las letras apostólicas y poderes otorgados por los Ayala a favor de Lope de Rueda y otros procuradores de causas de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, mientras que los clérigos de la iglesia designan también a sus representantes. La obra, que debía unir la capilla mayor con la de San Antón, perjudica según su criterio a los Ayala, que presentan escrito de petición y demanda ante el licenciado Diego García de Torres, provisor de la ciudad de Burgos, que también se transcribe. Sostienen éstos que ya sus abuelos estaban en posesión de una capilla dedicada a San Antón colateral con la capilla mayor de dicha iglesia, una capilla que Francisco de Ayala tiene por propia como lo fue de su padre y antepasados. Afirma que sus armas la presiden y que no puede dar sepultura a quien no sea descendiente legítimo de los fundadores. Después de tener noticia de que "ciertas personas se han entremetido a romper la pared entre la capilla de San Anton y la mayor para hacer un arco", se considera muy perjudicado, pues dicha apertura acabaría con la entrada propia. Boards are mildly worn, with a small crease in the center of the spine. Text is remarkable clean and bright. A beautiful book, with a warm, supple feel. *** Included in this works of Lactantius are: "The Divine Institutes", a treatise intended to point out the futility of pagan beliefs; "On the Wrath of God", a treatise directed at the Stoics; "The Works of God", written during Diocletian's persecutions; and the poem"Pheonix".
