Autograph drawing signed.
[Dornburg castle on the Saale river], 28. VIII. 1828. - 4to. 1 p. Hitherto unknown: "Guten Morgen / zum 28ten Aug. 1828 / Goethe" ("Good morning on the 28th of August 1828 / Goethe"), penned below a faint pencil drawing showing a hilly horizon with clouds - the panorama which the great poet admired every morning at sunrise during his prolonged stay at Dornburg castle between July and September 1828. His fondness for this view, ever constant and yet ever changing with the weather, is evident from the loving detail with which he repeatedly described it in his diary, once even discovering in it a mood invoked by the Odyssey, and he drew upon the image for the poem "Früh, wenn Tal, Gebirg' und Garten Nebelschleiern sich enthüllen", written there. - While the recipient of this curious gift Goethe gave away on his own 79th birthday is not identified, his former servant Paul Götze, who is known to have visited him that morning with cake and wine, must be regarded as a possible candidate. Other visitors of that day included the civil servant Christian Schuchardt and the librarian Ernst Weller with his sister and son, the writer Johann Diederich Gries, the lawyer Wilhelm von Schröter and the theologian Hermann Agathon Niemeyer.
