A fine copy, with green and yellow headband, in a near fine dust jacket with minor creasing to the top of the rear panel) and minor nicks at extremities. A superior copy. 2nd issue jacket (w/o "!." the author's masterwork. The multi-generational story of the Buendia family (seven generations). Garcia Marquez popularized a literary style called magic realism, which uses magical elements and events in otherwise ordinary and realistic situations. This special copy bears the ownership signature of K.S. Wilgus, the wife of Dr. A Curtis Wilgus, who served as professor of Latin American history at the University of Florida. He authored many articles and books on Latin American and was appointed by President Kennedy to the board of foreign scholarships as coordinator in the Office of Inter-American Affairs. Tipped into this copy is the printed card of Jose Guillermo Castillo, which is inscribed by him "con complements" / muy afectionos y / printed name / personales / Jose." Castillo, while acting director of the Literature Program of the Inter-American Foundation For the Arts, formed a committee to facilitate and guarantee the translation cycle of Latin-American authors translated into English. One of the translators on his committee was Gregory Rabassa. Ten years after being funded, the Literature Program had already sponsored the translation of more than 45 books, most of them written by "almost every major Latin American author to become known in this country," starting promisingly with this book, by Garcia Marquez (translated by Gregory Rabassa). He received many awards in his lifetime (1927-2014) including the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. This novel topped the list of books that have most shaped world literature over the last 25 years according to a survey of international writers commissioned by the global literary journal, Wasafiri (Sept 25, 2009), as a part of its 25th-anniversary celebration.
