The Eye Of Love.
London: Photography, 1954. London: Photography, 1954. First Edition. Wide octavo. Bound in pictorial soft paper boards. Black and white photographs throughout. Binding is a little rubbed, creased, worn to edges. Internally clean. With a foreword by Basil Burton. This photo essay follows a woman as she returns home, undresses, smokes a cigarette, gets ready to go out, and then heads to an empty hotel bar, where she apparently waits for an acquaintance. The woman is in fact Groebli's wife, Rita, and the collection has rightly been described as both wistful and romantic. Swiss-born, Groebli is known better in Germany, though this collection demonstrates his claim to be a world-class photo essayist.
