1700 - Amsterdam: De Hooghe, c 1700. Sheet 330 x 465mm. Narrow margins, some repairs at centrefold. A circular map of the Holy Land, the Eastern Mediterranean, Arabia and Persia, designed and drawn by Romeyn de Hooghe and engraved by J. von Linenberg to illustrate Jacob & Alewyn Basnage's 'T'groot waerelds tefereel'. Among the place names on the map are Jerusalem, Famagusta, Cairo, Niniva, Babylon, Eden, Mecca and Medina. The corners have four biblical scenes: Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden; the rainbow appearing over Noah's Arc after the Flood; Moses receiving the Ten Commandments; and the birth of Jesus. Above the map is the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) in a triangle and below a baroque compass rose. LAOR: 341.
