It was printed in May, 1912.This First Edition handbook had no subsequent printings, by Powell.Baden-Powell did not particulalrly like this book, and it wasn't until 1918 that she produced the next edition of the Handbook for Girl Scouts.This book is the 1912 edition, as indicated by the title, binding, content, format, and no date."Baden Powell was not impressed with the results and was later to refer to it as 'The Little Blue Muddly'. "There was a US edition edited by Juliette Lowe.This British Edition is the first.This is the TRUE First Edition book. It was preceded only by pamphlets: 'Pamphlet A', and 'Pamphlet B':"This book superseded [Only By pamphlets]: Pamphlet A: Baden-Powell Girl Guides, a Suggestion for Character Training for Girls and Pamphlet B: Baden-Powell Girl Guides, a Suggestion for Character Training for Girls by the same authors. In turn it was itself replaced by 'Girl Guiding' in 1918." 6.25 inches tall.PLEASE READ CONDITION:In good condition overall, especially for over 100 years old. This book has generalized usage wear, abrasion, dirt, small stamp, early inscription in pencil, signs of usage and reading, some internal dirt and similar signs of reading and use, including wear to the cover as shown in the picture. There is wear and abrasion and dirt stains to the covers and spine, including wear to the lettering on the cover, as shown, and particularly through the word 'handbook'. Excellent condition for a highly popular and rare book. A rare book and a particularly hard to obtain first edition. This book measures roughly 6.25 inches tall.The Handbook for Girl Guides or How Girls Can Help to Build Up the Empire is the full title of the book more commonly known as How Girls Can Help to Build up the Empire. It was the first handbook for Girl Guides Girl. The author was Agnes Baden-Powell in conjunction with (then) Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Baden-Powell. It was published in May 1912 by Thomas Nelson and Sons.The book was a reworking of the famous 'Scouting For Boys'. It was adapted for use by girls, although large sections remained unaltered and it included sections on stalking, tracking, signalling and camping. Several chapters on childcare, nursing and housewifery had been inserted and stories of heroic women and girls were sometimes substituted for the male ones. The book also contained the enrolment ceremony and details of the second- and first-class tests.This book superseded Pamphlet A: Baden-Powell Girl Guides, a Suggestion for Character Training for Girls and Pamphlet B: Baden-Powell Girl Guides, a Suggestion for Character Training for Girls by the same authors. In turn it was itself replaced by 'Girl Guiding' in 1918. Throughout the early years of Guiding, movements in different countries started publishing their own handbooks as well.In 2006, a facsimile edition of the book was available.This auction is for the original, First Edition, from 1912.The First Boy Scouts Handbook was printed by Doubleday, Page & Company, in 1910.
