Lavrence Kellam, Doway 1609 - The first edition of the Old Testament of what was to become known as the Douay Bible translated from the Latin Vulgate into English by Catholic scholars in exile during the reign of Elizabeth. The chief translator was Gregory Martin. This version would remain the standard for English speaking Catholics for the next four and one-half centuries. In the eighteenth century Richard Challoner would revise the Douay Version, but it would continue to be known by its original name. Herbert: 300. Two volumes: 1115 & 1124 pp. Includes entire Old Testament including the Prayer of Manasses and the Third and Fourth Books of Esdras. Text interspersed with historical accounts of each of the Six Ages of the Church. Series of tables at the end. A nice set of both volumes, complete with the final leaf of Vol I and the final two leaves of Vol II expertly replaced in age-matching facsimile. Binding is in full leather with matching later spines in six panels offset by raised bands and two gilt-stamped labels. Several pages of Genesis have marginal handwritten notes and there is a name inscription at the end. After Genesis, there is only a rare occasional marginal note. Some are scholarly and include Hebrew letters; and others appear to be from a father to his son giving advice based on related Bible verses. Last table in Vol. II has underlining of some words. Title pages stained with tears and slight losses to text mounted and remargined. The following leaf of Vol I also mounted and remargined. The interior has browning and foxing as normal. Ample margins. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
