The White Rajahs. A History of Sarawak from 1841 to 1946.
Cambridge: at the University Press, 1960 - Octavo. Original orange cloth, titiles gilt to spine on a green field. An excellent copy, the price-clipped jacket only faintly marked. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Anthony from Steven". Anthony Hobson (1921-2014) was the director of Sotheby's and noted bibliophile. "The little state of Sarawak was between 1841 and 1946 the scene of one of the most extraordinary experiments of personal rule in history. It was like something out of the MIddle Ages; and as Sir Steven Runciman is a great medievalist, it is entirely appropriate that he should have been invited to visit the country, study the official records, and write this history." (Jacket blurb). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
