Jonathan Cape 1955 - First English edition, fifteenth impression (1st impression 1949) of this novel, the story of three soldiers during the second world war campaigns in North Africa and Europe, made into a 1958 war drama film directed by Edward Dmytryk, starring Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, inscribed and signed to Pierre Berlacki (assistant manager on the film set and chess champion) by a great part of the production and the cast, ten people, namely Edward Dmytryk (director) "Sincerely", Ben Chapman (production manager) "Thank you for many kindnesses", Marlon Brando "Thanks for letting me honour this my best wishes always", Dean Martin "To Peter, thank you for being so nice", Maximilian Schell "Capt.
