Institutio logica, et philosophiae epicuri syntagma
Ex Officina Johannis Redmayne, Londini [i.e. London] 1668 - [12], 118, [14], 288pp. 'Philosophiae epicuri syntagma, Continens Canonicam, Physicam, & Ethicam' has a separated dated title, pagination, and register. A handsome and well preserved copy in contemporary blind-stamped speckled calf, the lightest of rubbing to extremities, some surface loss to upper board. Marking to title-page of first work, tear to text of A9, without loss of sense, horizontal tear through D4 of second work, again without loss of sense, small competent paper repair to bottom margin of L7, very small hole to L10, touching text without loss of sense. Two works by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi (1592-1665), the second of which sought to replace the dominant philosophical system of Aristotle with the logic, physics and ethics of Epicurus. Gassendi's work Philosophiae Epicuri syntagma (Lyon, 1649) had been gaining traction in philosophical circles in Commonwealth and Protectorate England, notably finding publication in a free English translation by Walter Charleton (Physiologia Epicuro-Gassendo-Charltoniana: or A fabrick of science natural, upon the hypothesis of atoms, London 1654) and further exposure in Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy. Demand was evidently sufficient to provoke Roger Daniel's son-in-law John Redmayne to print this second edition in 1668, the first having appeared in 1660. ESTC R10973, Wing G294. Size: 12mo
