THE GREEN MUMMY
London: John Long, [1908].. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-325 [326] 327-328: ads, original pictorial red cloth, front panel stamped in black, white and green, spine panel stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. First edition. "Hume's characteristic mix of criminal mystery, flippant romance and exotic adventure, in this case centered on a missing Peruvian mummy and smuggled emeralds. The story has a whiff of fantastic atmosphere -- how could it not when mummies are involved? -- but it belongs more rightly to the previously mentioned genres. The hero, Archie, a struggling artist with just 300 pounds a year to live on, wants to marry Lucy, whose stepfather, a fanatical Egyptologist collector, is not thrilled by the prospect, but he's keen on getting the Peruvian "green mummy," which gives Archie an opening. After numerous complications (some involving corpses), and revelations about parentage, all turns out well in the end, and the couple get married and wind up with nearly a thousand a year." - Robert Eldridge. Listed in Hubin (as is apparently every other book Hume wrote). Not listed in fantasy genre bibliographies. Splotchy fading to spine panel, shallow fraying to cloth at spine ends, some soiling to rear panel, inner front hinge a bit tender, inner rear hinge discreetly strengthened, a sound good copy of a notably scarce book, much harder to find than the U.S. edition of this novel.
