The first book publication of the second Shadow novel, first published in the second issue of THE SHADOW, July 1931, the issue in which Lamont Cranston makes his debut. "THE SHADOW, first published in [April] 1931, was the first of the trend setting pulp magazines built around a single character, much in the way that the earlier dime novels had featured the continuing adventures of such characters as Nick Carter and Buffalo Bill ... [The Shadow] was the nebulous, almost supernatural detective whose true identity was unknown, but who often took the identity of millionaire Lamont Cranston. For the first six years of the series, until 1937, The Shadow was a mysterious crime fighter possessing the deductive powers of Sherlock Holmes, the skill of a western gunfighter, and the abilities of a magician.
