A book on chess strategy -- moves described with explanatory notes. With the Abbreviations and Subscriber List sometimes lacking. François-André Danican Philidor (1726 - 1795) was a French composer and regarded as the best chess player of his age. Text block is clean and tight with no foxing. Covers rubbed overall with extrernal crack at back hinge. Contemporaneous engraved bookplate of G.W.F. Gregor on front pastedown. Gregor was a sometime Esquire of Cornwall, and lord of the manor at Trewarthenick House. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
