Through The First Antarctic Night 1898-99: A Narrative Of The Voyage Of The Belgica Among Newly Discovered Lands & Over An Unknown Sea About The South Pole -- SIGNED deluxe First Edition
Doubleday & McClure Co., New York 1900 - FIRST PRINTING. DELUXE LIMITED Edition signed by Cook on the limitation page. CONDITION: original silk cloth, 2cm split top front spine crease, 4cm split top rear spine crease, surface chipping up to 4mm deep bottom spine, cloth rubbed through to boards several places at board edges and at corners, japanese tissue repairs to front and rear inside hinges (original EPs), owner name and date on FFEP & "10 - 22" penned to rear fly leaf otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. This example was not bound with the half-title page included. I have studied it closely and determined that it was never placed (as opposed to having been pulled out). Rosove's Antartica bibliography indicates several variations in the deluxe edition, with some having two half-title pages, some with one, some with shorter binding covers. It seems that the book was put together when ordered, probably to save money. The limitation page states 1000 copies were made, but nobody has ever reported observing one numbered in the 300s. So it is likely that less the 300 were produced. The fragile silk cloth is very susceptible to rubbing and splitting, especially at the spine ends and corners. This example is in better than average condition for this book. The book measures 231mm tall x 150mm, and has 478 pages, 127 ills (mostly b/w photos including 4 color plates), 4 maps, 3 figures, 6 appendices, index. This deluxe edition includes a b/w photogravure portrait photo of Cook that is not found in the trade editions. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
