A Complete Treatise on Field Fortification with the General Outlines of the Principles Regulating the Arrangement the Attack and the Defence of Permanent Works.
New York: Wiley & Long. 1836 - Original brown patterned cloth with new cloth spine and cloth repair to upper front cover. 18mo (4 by 6 1/2 inches). 268pp. Illustrated with 12 folding plans. First edition of this important work by the military theorist and professor Dennis Hart Mahan. After graduating at the top of his class at West Point in 1824 Mahan was sent to Europe by the War Department to study public engineering works and military institutions. This book was the standard work on the subject and was carried into the field by officers in the Mexican and Civil Wars. Not in Howes or Nevins. Sabin 43863 lists two imprints from 1867. A good copy with some light wear to the corners and a small stain to the rear cover near the spine. The text is good with some moderate soiling and wear. The title page is torn at the lower left side and has a faint ink stamp in the right margin. The first few pages are lightly chipped in the upper corner. The plates are all in very good condition with some minor soiling. The last 30 or so pages of the book have a small stain in the lower corner and this affects the bottom margin of plate #12. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
