Philadelphia: Tanner, H.S., 1825. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18 x 20.75". Sheet measures 23.75 x 31" This large map of Asia offers ample detail in both the mainland and the islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It extends from the Arctic Circle south to New Zealand, and from Italy east to Polynesia. With its fine engraving and wealth of labeled information, the map exemplifies the qualities that have led historians to consider the "New American Atlas" from which it is sourced as one of the most magnificent atlases ever published in the United States. The map is in excellent condition with deluxe margins. Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-2858) was an American cartographer and statistical geographer. Born in New York, he moved to Philadelphia where he established his well-known publishing company with his brother. Tanner was the first American to publish a map of Texas, which subsequently went through eight editions. However, he is best known and most renowned for his New American Atlas. This fine map of Asia is a wonderful example of his work.
