Sacred Geography: or, gazetteer of the Bible
Boston: Samuel Armstrong, 1813. FIRST EDITION. Folding map of the "principal countries mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures" (torn at crease). Contemporary calf, worn and stained; interior browned and spotted as usual, though sound. Actually a very good copy of a book normally found in precarious condition. First edition of a wonderful reference to geographical localities mentioned in the Scriptures. In alphabetical order, the work describes the countries, kingdoms, nations and tribes with villages, towns, cities, provinces, hills, mountains, rivers, lakes, seas and islands mentioned in the Bible. The author includes an account of the religion, government, population, fulfillment of prophecies and conditions of the most important places. References are included; for example, Cabbon is a city in the tribe of Judah (Josh. xv, 40; Lat. 31, 37). Longer articles also appear (for example, a lengthy discussion of Ophir, the country peopled by the son of Joktan). This work is a invaluable resource for anyone interested in the background of those places mentioned in the Bible. Parish (1762-1825) was a clergyman from Connecticut. He was a leading opponent of the Jeffersonian Republican party and brought slavery issues into his political discourse.
