España: Grand Tarde
Kyuryu-do, Tokyo 1969 - Large 4to; illustrated throughout in black-and-white; magenta and yellow endpapers; pictorial boards without dust-jacket as issued; three-strand silk ribbon bookmark; supplemental softbound volume with matching wrappers and illustrated endpapers has light foxing on front and back; Illustrated paper-covered slipcase; minor abrasion to slipcase edge. Along with Eikoh Hosoe, Shomoei Tomatsu, Kikuji Kawada, Akira Tanno, and Akira Sato, Ikko Narahara was a founding member of the influential VIVO group. This book is divided into three sections titled Grand Tarde, Fiesta, and Vaya Con Dios that deal with the bullfight, the urban life in the streets, and finally the peasant life in the countryside. The influence of William Klein is visible in this volume's dramatic close-ups, erratic croppings, and full-page bleeds on numerous double gatefold pages. The high contrast, grainy gravure images give the work a tone that is at once highly impressionistic, raw and visceral. España: Grand Tarde is considered one of the most impressive postwar Japanese photobooks. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
