Signed--no inscription--by author Clarence Edward McCartney on the free front end paper. While a bit age tanned, the contents are otherwise clean, complete, and securely bound. A couple of leaves (pp. 181-184) have an improper bottom edge cut that affects only the margins and not the text. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind stamped lettering and decoration on the upper board. Slight spine slant and a bit of bumping/rubbing to the spine's head and tail edges. Blemish in the upper board's surface sheen. No ex-library marks. The author Clarence Edward. Macartney was one of the leaders of the conservatives during the early 1920s Fundamentalists-Modernists Controversy in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. In 'Sons of Thuder: Pulpit Power of the Past', addresses delivered as the L. P. Stone Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary in November 1928 have been expanded into ten chapters on John Bunyan, Thomas Guthrie, Thomas Chalmers, Edward Irving, Peter Cartwright, James Waddel, Gilbert Tennent, Samuel Davies, Eliphalet Nott, and Lyman Beecher.
