London: Ward Lock & Co Limited, 1907.. Octavo, pp. [16] 7-320, inserted frontispiece, original decorated tan cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold and blind. First edition. An Edwardian spy thriller featuring Sir Nigel Lacaita of Scotland Yard in which stolen documents concerning sensitive international relations between England and Russia are sought and recovered. This is a novel of genuine magic and the supernatural featuring an evil 800-year old Chinese black magician who creates artificial women who are tasked with bringing him their true loves so he can kill them and take their life force to give him additional power. A white magician defeats him and the artificial woman he has just created (with fourteen days to live) is given life. An adult Edwardian romance novel, not a children's fairy tale. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 148. Hubin (1994), p. 535. Early owner's signature on the front paste-down and at the top edge of the title page. Several spots on the rear cover, top edge of text block foxed, bookstore stamps on front free endpaper and recto of frontispiece, a very good copy. A scarce book. (#153431)
