ALCHERINGA: Ethnopoetics - Vol. 1 No. 1 [through] Vol. 4 No. 2 [Thirteen Issues, Complete Run]
Jerome Rothenberg and Dennis Tedlock / Boston University 1970-1980, New York / Boston - 8vo. Thirteen issues in perfect-bound wraps. Altogether, issues about very good to very good plus. Wraps show some modest toning, handling wear, and rubbing here and there; several mild corner creases, small tears to covers. Interiors remain bright, crisp, and clean throughout; binding good and sound. Several include flexi-disc records. Overall an impressive set. Full run of this literary magazine which served as central organ for the ethnopoetics movement (whose primary theorists were both Rothenberg and Tedlock). As described in Issue #1, the movement's objectives were manifold, but ethnopoetics sought above all to promote attention toward poetic practices outside the Western tradition, with the ethical aim of "combat[ting] cultural genocide in all its manifestations." A typical issue featured translated from various third-world societies, along with anthropological remarks on local poetic practices, but also often included original work by Western poets and artists including Diane di Prima, Gary Snyder, Charles Olson, and Pauline Oliveros (for example). Several issues include flexi-disc recordings of readings and performances, and one includes theoretical essays by Edouard Glissant, Fredric Jameson, and others. A nicely preserved run of this unique publication. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
