Typed Letter Signed to Theodore Roosevelt
1904 - A most interesting and bizarre typed letter signed to President Theodore Roosevelt. 1 page, square 12mo, 7.5 x 7 inches, no place, no date, but likely written in 1904 before he committed for re-election, in part: ".This morning I received the following telegraphic night letter: 'We, a committee representing many American authors signed an address to Roosevelt expressing the hope that he will be the next President. May we add your Name?' To this interesting appeal I have just wired the following answer: 'No, don't sign my name. Roosevelt most unsafe and dangerous man in America. His election greatest calamity that could happen to us. Publish this.' If they do not publish it I will when their document appears, if it appears. In this connection Mr. President let me beg you when the time comes to go into the field personally and to bring to bear on the proposition of your re-election your own most winning and compelling personality. I urge this even at some sacrifice of dignity because I believe your continuance in office is vital to the welfare of America and will be largely determinative in the next few years of the Peace and happiness of humanity and the world." Horizontal fold, tape remnants on verso, still excellent condition. American born clergyman journalist, historian, and adventure writer who was also a close friend of Theodore Roosevelt. He served with the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War and died at age 58 from pneumonia in 1920. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
