Go Down, Moses and Other Stories
New York: Random House 1942 - Deluxe Edition. Thick octavo. Number 19 of 100 numbered copies; SIGNED by the author. Faulkner's collection of short stories that masquerades as a novel, set in his "apocryphal county" of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. This copy belonged to Leo Cherne, a refugee activist, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and Medal of Freedom recipient; his ex libris is affixed to the first pastedown. A friend to Marc Chagall and Robert Frost, Cherne was gifted this volume by one of these men, or perhaps by Faulkner himself, though no attribution of the provenance appears in this copy. Previous owner's ex libris on first pastedown and toning opposite, apparent water stain to bottom right corner of the limitation page, extreme edge tips of several pages bent with a few small edge nicks, light fading to spine gilt as usual, else very good in three-quarter red cloth over textured paper boards, lacking publisher's tissue jacket. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
