George Allen, Ruskin House, London 1894 - First Edition, first printing. 8 by 5.5 inches, xxvii, 476 pp. Gilt decorated original green cloth with a peacock design (featuring a Peacock atop a sundial) to the upper board and spine. Gilt titles on front cover and spine. All edges gilt. With a preface by George Saintsbury. Cover design is bright. Some faint spotting to cover boards, spine ends lightly crushing and book is cocked, otherwise very good condition. Frontispiece protected by tissue-guard. With a facsimile of a handwritten dedication written and signed by Hugh Thomson to front. This so-called Peacock edition, the iconic 1894 printin , may be the most collected of all "Pride and Prejudice" reprintings. Hugh Thomson's 1894 Peacock Edition. Thomson, one of the most prolific and popular illustrators of his time, did fine line drawings for all six novels by Jane Austen; but to this edition he added amusing chapter heads and decorative initials to his popular baroque style line drawings, as well as a lavish green and gilt cover featuring a peacock perched on a sundial, enthralled by his own feathers.Pride And Prejudice, the story of Mrs. Bennet's attempts to marry off her five daughters is one of the best-loved and most enduring classics in English literature.
