Contemporary full marbled calf neatly rebacked, with original spine laid down. Frontispiece map of the City and Lake of Mexico. 'Diaz del Castillo, Spanish conquistador and chronicler, joined Herman Cortes in 1519 and participated in the conquest of Mexico. His monumental work, written late in his life when he was living in Guatamela, gives a fresh account of the events, the scenes and the people that he himself had known; his descriptions are excellent, with the emphasis on everyday life and concerns and on the joys and problems of the common soldier.' (Palau 72373; Hill, p. 83; Cox 1, p. 241; Field 425). Binding slightly worn along edges. Previous owner's bookplate on inside of front cover. Minor and sporadic foxing and offsetting throughout. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
