Still a scarce Confederate imprint with AmericanaExchange/RareBookHub not citing any Columbia, SC imprints of Chisholm's "Manual" at auction at all (they do have records of seven Richmond imprints and one 1861 Charleston imprint at auction since 1950). A Charleston native, Julian John Chisholm (1830-1903) graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in March 1850 thereafter studying eye surgery in Paris. Upon returning to Charleston in 1852, Chisholm started a private practice and accepted a position at his alma mater as professor of surgery in 1858. Chisholm toured hospitals in London and Paris in 1859 and, after the outbreak of the Second Italian War of Independence, traveled to Milan to observe treatment of wounded soldiers gaining valuable knowledge of battlefield surgery. Chisholm started a private surgical hospital in Charleston in 1860 and utilized his European experience when treating those wounded during the Battle of Fort Sumter in April 1961. In September 1861 Chisholm received the first Confederate military medical officer commission and served in the C.S.A. Medical Department in Virginia and South Carolina. Although a number of Civil War surgical manuals were published in the North, Confederate surgeons really only had three Southern-printed references: Edward Warren's AN EPITOME OF PRACTICAL SURGERY FOR FIELD AND HOSPITAL, Samuel Preston Moore's A MANUAL OF MILITARY SURGERY, and Chisholm's MANUAL OF MILITARY SURGERY. The latter was probably the most influential of the three with its first edition published in Charleston by Evans & Cogswell in July 1861 (Parish & Willingham #6109) followed by two Richmond, Virginia 1861 imprints (Parish & Willingham #6110 and #6111). A "revised and improved" second edition was published in Richmond in 1862 (Parish & Willingham #6112). This Columbia, South Carolina 1864 third edition (Parish & Willingham #6113) enjoys the lengthiest pagination and a concluding 52 page section featuring 26 plates each with a related explanation page. OCLC locates only ten copies of the Columbia edition among member libraries although Parish & Willingham cites 23 institutional copies. A primary contractor for the printing of Confederate government bonds, currency, and stock certificates, Evans & Cogswell was a Charleston, South Carolina printer-publisher which relocated to the state capital of Columbia in 1864 with its building located near the Congaree River waterfront at the corner of Huger and Gervais Streets. The company's building was burned and contents seized in February 1865 during General Sherman's occupation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
