An album of decoratively arranged seaweed samples from the Pacific coast]
[Mostly California 1880 - (12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches). Approximately 60 leaves, each with elaborately arranged specimens, each captioned with the location gathered. (Various degrees of loss as usual). Contemporary half brown morocco over cloth covered boards, upper cover pictorially stamped and titled Moss Album (worn) A Pacific Coast seaweed album: among the most elaborately arranged albums of specimens we have ever encountered. This Victorian album of pressed seaweed specimens is unusual in two respects: each is carefully labeled as to the place it collected, being mostly in California; and each leaf contains specimens which are often pressed into elaborate designs - a horseshoe, a cross, a lyre, a harp, a basket, a star, a heart, etc. Collection sites include San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Carmen Island, Mendocino, Corenada, Santa Barbara, San Luis Rey, San Quentin, Alameda, Oakland, and others, as well as one sample each from Seattle, Portland, and Victoria, B.C. The Seattle sample from Seattle is labeled as "W.T." for Washington Territory, dating the album to before November of 1889 when Washington became a state. All told, an unusual seaweed specimen volume, displaying fully the Victorian penchant for collecting and scrapbooking. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
