The Comancheros (Original screenplay for the 1961 film, May 3, 1961 draft)
Twentieth Century-Fox, Los Angeles, CA 1961 - Final Revised script for the 1961 film. On the front wrapper is a single notation in holograph pencil noting a revision to the production number (4060), and at the top of each revision page is the name of screenwriter James Edward Grant, who made the revisions. Director Michael Curtiz' final film, completed by an uncredited John Wayne after Curtiz fell ill during production. A wildly entertaining and highly anachronistic film: although set in 1843 Texas, the characters all use Winchester lever action rifles and Colt Peacemaker pistols, which were not available until 1866 and 1873 respectively. The Guinn Williams character is said have stolen rifles from Fort Sill and to have served a sentence in the Yuma Territorial Prison, neither of which became operational until after the Civil War (1869 and 1876 respectively). The Comanchero leader's status as a former Confederate officer is also anachronistic due to the fact that the Confederate States of America did not exist until the onset of the Civil War in 1861. Summed up nicely by Bosley Crowther upon the film's release as "so studiously wild and woolly it turns out to be good fun . [t]here's not a moment of seriousness in it, not a detail that isn't performed with a surge of exaggeration, not a character that is credible."Blue studio wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 10 and production No. 4060, dated May 3, 1961. Title page present, dated May 3, 1961, noted as Final, with credits for screenwriter Grant and novelist Wellman. 137 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 5/15/61 and 8/7/61. Pages about Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound internally with three gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
