On Viol and Flute
London: C. Whittingham and Co. at the Chiswick Press for Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1890. First printing. Gorgeous Arts and Crafts full reddish-brown morocco by Anastasia Power with her initials signed in monogram on rear turn in, "AP" (interlocking). Covers magnificently gilt-tooled with elaborate double-ruled square boxes (eighteen in total) with dots in the corners and a circular arrangement of 12 roses on green onlays/ interlocking stems on front cover. The rear cover has the same square patterning, but no central rose design. Spine with six panels, five of which are attractively stamped in gilt floral and leaf motif. No. 44 of 50 Copies Only on Large Paper, signed by the printer. A fine copy of a most attractive and period binding. Though a pencil annotation on the front fly indicates that the binding is by Alice Pattinson as evidenced by a pencil inscripton on the veso of the front free endleaf which reads, "Spring Gardens Gal[lery]. Panton Club. July 1925. Mrs Loosely. Book + binding A. P." Annie Power was trained by Douglas Cockerell and worked with Sylvia Stebbing and then joined C. R. Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft c. 1902 where she produced fine bindings until 1905 or thereabouts. A stunning period binding full of the Arts & Crafts flavor of the early 20th Century.
