The War [being a faithful record of the transactions of the war between the United States of America and their territories, and the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the dependencies thereof; declared on the eighteenth day of June, 1812]
New York: S. Woodworth & Co., 1812-1813. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A quite scarce to rare bound volume containing the first edition, first printing of the first fifty-two issues of "The War", being a faithful record of the transactions of the war between the United States of America and their territories, and the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the dependencies thereof; declared on the eighteenth day of June, 1812, compiled, edited, and published by American author, literary journalist, playwright, librettist, and poet Samuel Woodworth. Woodworth established this weekly in order to report to the American people the principal events related to the War of 1812. The issues contain relevant and interesting information including Congressional actions, information on British and American Naval Forces, surrenders, the number and description of guns mounted on vessels, relevant Statements, Addresses, and the like. Beginning with an Index, this quite scarce Volume contains the entire first year of newspaper beginning with the first Issue dated June 27, 1812 and ending with Issue 52 dated June 15, 1813, being, in addition to the two-page Index, a total of 218 pages of text. In Very Good condition, the volume itself is rather worn, and the individual issues contained within show some tide marks and wear, primarily to the Index (at the front), the first three issues, and the 1813 issues, fold lines, foxing, and marginal tears. Issue 9 shows heavy foxing but remains quite legible, the leaf containing pp 173/174 shows loss to the bottom including loss of some text, leaf 179/180 shows a small center tear with some loss of text, and leaf 183/184 shows a horizontal tear across the center with no loss of text. While Woodworth perhaps is best known for his Song/Poem "The Bucket", a work more commonly known as "The Old Oaken Bucket", a song popular in anthologies and collections for over 100 years and the origin of the Old Oaken Bucket Trophy given annually to the winner of the Indiana/Purdue football game, "The War" was a notable contribution to history providing, as Woodworth intended, both a news source for those seeking current information about the War of 1812 and a history of the War for future generations. Copies of individual issues are remarkably uncommon to the market and volumes containing the entire first year of the publication are as scarce as hen's teeth. As of the time of this listing, auction records show a 2015 auction sale of an individual issue of the newspaper (Vol. 1, No. 12) at $162.50. Most notably, such auction records show no complete set of the first year of "The War" coming to auction since 1920. A Very Good copy of a NOTABLE AND EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE RECORD OF THE WAR OF 1812. RARE INDEED.
