Letter. A typed letter signed, from the private secretary of Isadore Kerman to Aleister Crowley, along with a typed receipt, signed by Crowley, acknowledging the loan of Thirty Pounds.
NP, NP 1942 - A single sheet of 9 x 7 inch paper with typed message and the letterhead address of solicitor Isidore Kerman, to which is pinned a piece of 4.5 x 8 inch notepaper on which is typed a receipt for thirty pounds, loaned to Crowley by Kerman. The receipt is (unusually) signed by Crowley with his legal name: "Edw[ar]d Alex[ander] Crowley." Isidore Kerman was for a long time Crowley's solicitor. The letter, which is dated December 16th 1942 and addressed to Crowley at 140, Piccadilly, London W.1., advises him that he is returning the attached I.O.U. following Crowley's repayment of a thirty pound loan. Interestingly Kerman's secretary also mentions that he has written to the Chiswick Press - Crowley's preferred printers - advising them that the debt has been repaid, the implication being that they were offering some sort of surety on Crowley's behalf; possibly agreeing not to release stocks of his books until notified that Kerman had been repaid (such an arrangement is confirmed by Crowley's diary entry for the day of the loan, "Kerman . insists on a letter from Chiswick Press - blast him!"). Crowley was not exactly well-known for the repayment of debts, but evidently was clever enough to heed the old adage that only a fool would cheat his own accountant or solicitor. Both the letter and the note are in VG + condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
