Tissue-guarded black-and-white frontispiece and two other full-page plates by Walter Crane; head- and tail-pieces by Jacomb Hood. Bound by Riviere in full green morocco, raised bands, gilt rules. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Bound in at the rear is the Japanese pictorial vellum paper lettered in red used for the original upper cover. Contains the title-story, "The Nightingale and the Rose", "The Selfish Giant", "The Devoted Friend" and "The Remarkable Rocket". One of the monuments of children's literature. On the front pastedown is the bookplate of the noted New York collector Samuel Heiman. Spine and cover edges rubbed and inevitably faded from green to brown. Slight spotting of prelims.
