London, Smith, Elder and Co., 1842.FIRST EDITION 1842. 8vo, approximately 210 x 135 mm, 8¼ x 5¼ inches, 3 folding maps, 2 with coloured outlines, lacks black and white map 2, replaced with an identical map from the second edition of 1874 and put in a pocket at rear, 6 woodcuts in the text, pages: xii, 1 - 214 including index, half - title present, rebound in full blue morocco, gilt lettering to spine, gilt decoration to spine with anchors between raised bands, covers with gilt and blind decoration to edges with anchors in each corner, housed in a plain blue cloth slipcase. Pale brown staining to outer margins of all pages, including half - title and title pages, worse at the front and back, the coloured folding maps have browning to the folds (see images), first folding map has neat repairs to 2 folds and a few small neat repairs to margins, the map in pocket has small piece cut from a corner, not affecting image, occasional other small pale stains in margins, some edges slightly brittle, no advertisements in this copy. A stained copy of this important Darwin in a handsome binding, priced to reflect condition. See The Works of Charle Darwin, by R.B. Freeman, page 58 No. 271.
