Paris: l'Auteur, 1791. Octavo; a very good copy in original condition, stitched in plain blue-grey wrappers (some small tears and damage). Lunar living is rather like France. First edition: lunar life proves very similar to life in provincial France, but the music is better.Beffroy de Reigny (1757-1811) was a highly successful journalist and dramatist. His most important works were written in the period succeeding the French revolution, and he was fond of using lunar society to satirise the French, as can be seen in his burlesque journal Les Lunes, published monthly. This is the libretto for his popular opera Nicodème, one of several Paris editions of the same year (another appeared in Avignon, and a 'third' edition of 1797 is also recorded). As the title shows, the opera was first performed in November 1790, running for over four hundred performances. And it is a cracking piece of theatre, in which disgruntled villagers sing of their woes under the tyrannical rule of a feudal lunar government. Frisky youngsters Frerot and Lolotte, disenchanted, are reduced to singing of the disappointments and hardships of their life, but are saved from drudgery by the arrival of the aviator Nicodème, replete with persuasive ideas for urban renewal. It is to be hoped that Lolotte's early lament was not shared by the audience: 'ils disent com ça qu'ils n'sont guère d'humeur d'entendre eun (sic) chanson, qu'ils ont plutôt envie de pleurer que d'rire.'.
