Flatland : A Romance of Many Dimensions.
Seeley & Co., London 1884 - Softcover. Large octavo. (9 x 7 inches) viii + 100pp. Original publisher's printed parchment wrap-around jacket over stiff card wrappers. B/w illustrations. The first edition, published pseudonymously, of this classic satirical tale set in a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures. Although essentially a satire on the social hierarchies of Victorian Britain, many find interest in its mathematical elements and the questions about the relationships between dimensions that it poses. The first edition is genuinely scarce, presumably due to its rather flimsy binding and the pseudonymous author. Parchment wrapper a little wrinkled & discolored, missing a one inch chip from bottom of spine and quarter inch chip from top. A few small chips to front panel, quite heavily rubbed at edges. Previous owners' bookplates inside front cover & on rear free endpaper. Endpapers discolored and with a few spots of foxing. Small clipping with an early review tipped to front free endpaper, which also has a tiny hole in it (above the clipping), and a short tear to the fore-edge. A previous owner has written Abbott's name & the titles and years of publication of two of his previous publications in ink in the centre of the title-page, otherwise a solid, complete near about VG copy of a scarce First Edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
