An exceptional copy of this work on practical geometry by the French engineer, cartographer, and mathematician Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706). Manesson Mallet was a soldier in Louis XIV's army specializing in military engineering. Following his military career he was invited to the King's court as a mathematics teacher where he authored several books on subjects ranging from military science to astronomy. In the present work, Manesson Mallet applies geometry to garden design, architecture, fortifications, cartography, etc., by incorporating geometric solids and diagrams in to fully realized engraved environments of well known locations throughout Europe. The first three volumes include famous places in France such as views in Paris, Versailles, Saint-Cloud, Fontainebleau, Chantilly, Marly, Noisy, Richelieu, Meudon and Liancourt. The fourth volume takes the reader farther afield to ruins in Rome, views of Naples, Seville, Madrid, Greenwich among other places. A fine set, suffering only from some light damage to the foot of two volumes.PROVENANCE: Johan Gabriel Sack (1697-1751) a Swedish Bibliophile with his signature dated in Paris October 31, 1729 on the front and rear paste-down of the first volume.
