GIBBON'S ROMAN EMPIRE The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Eight Volumes Complete)
John Murray, London 1887 - Lovely set of this classic of ancient history, bound in full, honey colored polished leather which is lavishly decorated in gilt especially on the spines. All maps plus the frontispiece portrait ofr Gibbon are present. Bindings are square and tight, and the contents are bright and clean. Does not look like it was ever read very much if at all. Minor blemishes to the leather here and there, and rub to the joints and one small chip to top right corner of spine on first volume. Hinges are all intact. An impressive looking set that is decorator quality. All edges of text block gilt, and the lavish gilt embellishments on the spines and armorial deviceon front covers are still as bright as the day they were made. Five raised bands on the spines. A not only attractive but also useful reference set on the years spanning the decline of Rome from its height to the fall of the Byzantine Roman Empire in the East. Distinguished looking old bookplates in Latin on each of the inside front covers. Considerably discounted so there may be extra shipping charge depending on destination. Size: Octavo, 415. 425, 433, 410, 415, 428, 412, 434pp [Attributes: Hard Cover]
