Rebecca's diary
Sydney : Ant Press, 1990. No. 1 of an edition limited to 15, signed by the artist. Two volumes octavo, the first volume in a unique binding of suede over goatskin by John Tonkin, one of Australia's finest design binders, with 56 original etchings (35 are hand coloured), printed on handmade paper, collograph endpapers; the second volume, bound in matching goatskin, is titled A foreword to Rebecca's diary, with an extract from Cinderella, limited again to 15 copies (this is also copy no. 1), with an original etching; housed in a special clamshell box with printed label. Rebecca’s diary as an artwork is a sumptuous production, every element hand crafted to the highest quality. The story it tells through the etchings, which are of both text and illustration, is the untold history of Cinderella, revelaing the private thoughts of the young girl as her world turns around her. Using the familiarity of the Cinderella story as a device, Oppen creates a work which delves into a more universal theme of adolescence, and the fears and hopes of a girl approaching adulthood. Collections: National Library of Australia; State Library of Queensland; State Library of New South Wales.
