Whale Ship Outfitting Book for the Bark Mermaid, 1891.
(New Bedford): C.R. Sherman, n.d. . 12mo. 46 pages of printed lists interleaved with occasional blanks, followed by 32 unnumbered pages for notes, of which 7 contain manuscript entries.. These books were issued by ship chandleries for the use of people responsible for provisioning whale ships. Printed in the book, by category, is every item or sort of clothing or food that might be needed on a whaling voyage. The shopper entered the amount needed next to the item, and it was provided by the chandlery. This copy contains markings only on the page headed "Nautical" in which quantities are marked for such things as barometers and spy glasses. In an interesting re-use of the book, the pages at the back record labor performed on the ship by seamen, riggers and carpenters in 1891, presumably in preparation for going to sea. The "Mermaid" was built in Westport, Mass. in 1855. In 1891 she went on a two year voyage to the North Pacific, returning with 350 sperm, 360 whale oil and 9400 pounds of bone. Very good condition, bound in stiff boards.
