As Strange a Maze.
Denis Archer [1935], London - Small 8vo. Light blue cloth with dark blue lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 285pp, (24pp ads). Very good/very good. Faintest of edgewear and lightly age toned endpapers; jacket a bit edgeworn and lightly rubbed. A tight, handsome first edition of this American author's only murder mystery, set in Bermuda at Easter. She boldly signs and inscribes the front flyleaf "For Daphne and Allan / With all good wishes -- / Florence Leighton Pfalzgraf / [smily face] / Maplewood, New Jersey / May 1938." Facing front pastedown bears a lovely 2¼" X 3½" blue and gilt pictorial playing card used as bookplate affixed to it, inscribed below by just-mentioned recipient: "This book belongs to / Daphne Dame Cerman." Leighton signs here using the true last name she stopped using on her books because of anti-German sentiments. A seldom-seen title, very uncommon in the jacket. Leighton (1902-97) is best known for juvenile fiction, histories of the Coast Guard and the short story "Heaven's Gate," turned into the 1935 Shirley Temple/Joel McCrea film "Our Little Girl." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
