IN BRIGHTER CLIMES; OR, LIFE IN SOCIOLAND: A REALISTIC NOVEL ..
Knoxville, East Tennessee: Chavannes and Co., [1897].. Octavo, [1-2] [i] ii-iv [1] 2-254, original pictorial gray-green wrappers printed in black. First edition, later issue. A sequel to THE FUTURE COMMONWEALTH; OR, WHAT SAMUEL BALCOM SAW IN SOCIOLAND (1892). In the 1960s, a young married couple, Charles and Mary, emigrate to Socioland, an American cooperative commonwealth in Central Africa. "Chavannes states that this is a history of the life and marriage of Charles Morril and Mary Lenard, who live in a country 'under social condition very different' from those in America. He places Socioland in Africa because the Mormons have 'pre-empted' the only site available in the U.S. and because he objects to the Moon or Mars "as a dwelling place for earthly beings." Although he gives some notice to property reform and has the commonwealth handle all trade, most attention goes to sexual matters. Women have gained full equality with men, prostitution does not exist, and there is no stigma attached to illegitimate births. Marriage is a free contract between equals. After Morril's wife has two children, the main story line concerns his affair with a young woman, Rose Mansfield, who is something of a flirt. When Mary learns of this, the couple is brought closer together, and they realize that monogamy is the 'best form of sexual association' at the present stage of civilization." - Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 154. This book was published in 1895 in cloth with an inserted frontispiece portrait of the author. The 1897 copies, issued in paper without the frontispiece as "New Thought Library" number 1 (May 1897) appear to comprise trimmed down first printing sheets. Both the 1895 and the 1897 issues are rare. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 196. Roemer, The Obsolete Necessity, p. 198. Rooney, Dreams and Visions: A Study of American Utopias, 1865-1917, p. 184. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, pp. 105-06. Wright (III) 1000. Signature of Chas. C.
