The Picture of Philadelphia, Giving and Account of Its Origin, Increase and Improvements in Arts, Sciences, Manufactures, Commerce and Revenue...
12mo (6 3/4" x 4 1/4"), original full leather with gilt lettered morocco spine label, folding plan frontispiece, xii, 358 pp. Joints split, top cover almost detached, some reinforcement with archival paper to hinges, but not that effective, spine ends and corners bumped, a little binding wear, signature on title, mild toning and foxing to contents. Early history of Philadelphia pertaining to its established institutions, such as law enforcement, business, banking, museums and landmarks. Mease was a physician and scientist, as well as an author, and managed to write and compile several medical works. However, he seems to be best known for literature not linked to the medical profession. While his Picture of Philadelphia is his best known work, according to the DAB his Geological Account of the United States (1807) was "a pioneer work in the field." This particular edition with 358 pages appears to be a variant issue, and less common than the 376 page version. The OCLC does not appear to locate a print copy of this version. DAB XIII. Howes M471. OCLC.
