Longman., London 1757 - Three volume set of the works of this Restoration period tragedian, including Alcibiades; Don Carlos, Prince of Spain; Titus and Berenice; Cheats of Scapin; Friendship in Fashion; Soldier's Fortune; The Atheist, or the Second Part of the Soldier's Fortune; The Orphan; History and Fall of Caius Marius; Venice Preserv'd; Poems & Letters. All bound in full brown calf, likely of the period; worn & chipped with some external splits at the hinges, but not in danger of detachment; minor staining; spines brittle with some loss at the heads of volumes 1 & 3; armorial bookplate of Frederici Trench thuggishly removed from the first two volumes but present in the third; name crudely effaced from each title page. Text clean; blank leaf, frontispiece, xii, [310] pages, 2 blank leaves; blank leaf, [408] pages, blank leaf; blank leaf, 382 pages, blank leaf. The Trenches were Anglo-Irish aristocrats, with two Fredericks serving as MPs, the latter raised to Baron Ashtown; it would be difficult to ascribe with certainty the exact Frederick to whom the set belonged, as it was a popular name within the family. 4¼" by 6¾" [Attributes: Hard Cover]
