Maskee. A Shanghai Sketchbook
- The wicked, decadent Shanghai of the thirties deliciously captured! Limitation No. 166 of unknown number. Inscribed and signed by Schiff. Closed, 27 by 19 cm. Stretched open, its 22 panels can reach 418 cm, or over 4 meters. Schiff (1908-1968) was an Austrian Jew who settled in Shanghai in 1930 and remained for 14 years, drawing inspiration from the colorful intermingling of Western and Chinese cultures and the vitality of its nightlife, its street life, its shadowy underworld and scrim of corruption. All of this serves as the backdrop for this humorous panorama, with its gobs, prostitutes and golddiggers, foreign expatriates, dissolute, sophisticated, desperate, and its smoky, boozy ambiences. Blue silk fabric of cover worn through in corners. Occasional soiling to the plates, but overall a bright and attractive copy. Leporellos. Silk over outer boards. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
