The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820. Hardcover. Very Good +. Thomas Stothard. Two volumes complete - Volume One - [2], xcii, 429pp, [1] and Volume Two - v, [1], 415pp, [1]. 8vo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Magnificent set in full straight grain morocco, five raised bands, spines in six panels, title in gilt to second panel, volume number in the fourth, remaining panels with gilt motiff and an double fillet frame, covers with double fillet border and dentelle (matching the inner dentelle), another smaller pattern is embossed inside that, gilt hatching pattern to 1/3 of each outer edges, beautiful marbeled endpapers. Double silk book markers (two per volume) are frayed atht ends, one page wrinkled, otherwise a very clean set with just a touch of wear to a couple of corners (no bumps) and minor signs of use on the hinges. All textblock edges gilt. Contents very clean. Binding and boards rock solid, no splits. It's always difficult to age-estimate these bindings, but this looks like the high-house style binding Bayntun did for Southran's, circa 1900. In any event, bindings are bright red with straight-grain morocco leather and a lots of gilt. The spines are not at all sun damaged, but have darkened evenly just a touch, very nicely matching the boards. A handsome full morocco set with excellent color.
